|

I have been planning an off-road event in my head for some time, and after the success of the recent duathlon, I think this winter would be a great time for it.
The event will be held in the Black Mountains near Bwlch and will comprise a short hill run circuit, a mountain bike ride finishing with a longer hill run with some height gain to finish.
It will be more challenging than the road duathlon, probably taking the fastest people under 2 hours and the last man in at around 3 hours.
The hill run will probably be wet and muddy, a lot of fun but with no seriously steep climbs or descents. You will need off-road shoes, preferably fell shoes to cope with mud. I would not try and run in bike shoes to save time! (Though you could bike in fell shoes )
The biking will also be fun, mixed singletrack and bridleway, and will be suitable for anyone that has been mountain biking in the area before. There will be no seriously steep descents or technical sections, and it could easily be ridden with a rigid bike (or cyclo-X?? )
Run - approx 1.5miles with 70m climbing/descent
MTB - approx 8 miles with 250m of climbing/descending
Run - 4 miles with 225m climbing/descending
The distances may seem similar, but in the wet running up hill is quicker than cycling!
The start and transition will be 100m from a lane with a small amount of parking. Due to the time of year I will have minimum kit list to be posted later (ie waterproofs, inner tube, fluids on the bike etc)
I may organise a social after too, either at the local or at our house
I need to get an idea of how many people would be interested in this event, and how many can make it on 12th January, a saturday. I also hope to invite Brecon AC and the Wheelers
I've had an offer of marshalling from Dave who wont touch an MTB! but would love to have 1 or 2 more
Please reply with your interest and if this date suits _________________ "The greatest pleasure in life, is doing the things people say we cannot do." |

Nice one Steven - It should be a good early season tester. I just need to find somewhere to get some fell shoes, mmmm ... food for thought _________________ The biggest supplier of kit to UK entrants in the MdS and other extreme ultra's. Few boys from the MBWales lot fancy it too. That date is good for all of us. Look forward to it.

Sounds great Neil
I would like to have an idea of numbers, as I don't think we would cope with an extra 20 boys from Talgarth.
I haven't quite worked it out yet, but there will be a small additional charge for non-members (less than a pint!) to cover "day membership"
A note to some who might be thinking of doing the event, but are worried about biking or have a recent foot injury, you could do it as a relay in pairs if you wanted
Great to hear of all the interest so far.
Time and cost details will be put up shortly
ps - Officially this is an "Endurance challenge" and not a race as we're on public trails, but there may be some prizes for good performance
In the future we may have the opportunity to run a duathlon in Llanglwys Forest, if we're all nice to Ian , but I wanted to run this one on trails I know well

Despite it being a little quiet, the duathlon is still going ahead as planned for the 12th Jan. I hope to have more details in place by the New Year Party _________________ "The greatest pleasure in life, is doing the things people say we cannot do." |

OK, I'll ask around. I'm in Bristol at the moment but will be back in Brecon on the weekend and will chase up who is interested, at a guess I think it'll be a handful.

The duathlon will start at 11am on Saturday 12th January from near the cattle grid. This is 1 km up Tremynfa Road in Bwlch which is just before the bend on this map HERE and is at Grid Reference 160224
It should be over by 1pm so I have arranged for us to go to the New Inn in Bwlch after for drinks.
Sandwiches, baguettes and chips will be provided and are included in the race cost which will be:
£2 for members
£4 for non-members to include day membership
Please can you tell me if you are coming so that I can have an idea of numbers for food
I also need some definite replies from marshalls who are prepared to stand on a cold hillside for 2 hours
Anyone is welcome to join the club for 2008 on the day for £15 and I will bring forms with me, if you intend on joining us for other training sessions and events in the year. Members from 2007 don't need to join again yet _________________ "The greatest pleasure in life, is doing the things people say we cannot do." |

I would like to race/plod, however if you require a marshall happy to stand around for a couple of hours and shout positive things, I will not be cold because I will be wearing quality kit from Likeys!
Either way I will eat some chips afterwards......

| Steve - really sorry, but we are in London all that weekend for Kate's parents golden wedding anniversary. Would have marshalled otherwise. |

Count me in.
Can we have a nice knarly decent to justify me having to lug a 5" full susser with 2.3" tyres around the course please*?

Great stuff, looks like we've got quite a few coming

Making excuses all ready Ian? There will be some fun descents but nothing too gnarly, I'm sure 2.5 inches would be more than enough travel, in fact you could even try it on a CycloX bike
I sent a text to John to cascade to the Wheelers, but do you know if anyone like Al or Ryan wants to come along? _________________ "The greatest pleasure in life, is doing the things people say we cannot do." |
