I've been thinking about picking up a tpb to read Fables, but don't really know much about it other than its supposed to be an interesting take on the characters. Seen Court's crazy OA collection so I know he'll chime in at some point.

But anyway, what can I expect from this series and what makes it good, what kind of readership and genre is this?

The more I try to come up with the perfect "draw you in" description, the more I feel my words are inadequate...so I think I'll let IGN explain it for me. They just chose Fables as the best comic being published by DC. They even go so far as to say it's the best comic being published...period. Willing to give it a shot? Very Happy

I just finished the first 2 issues in the 1st graphic novel. So far it is pretty good. I'll post when I have more of a grasp on the plot direction.

CW - looking forward to reading your review on it. Too bad Court copped out and had to rely on a link to explain why he likes the story so much Wink

Okay,
Lucky for you boys and girls I couldn't sleep last night so I finished off the book!

The premise, as you may have guessed, involves a community of famous story book characters as well as a few literary creations living in exile, in the modern world. A quick note: the book is far more enjoyable if you have a base knowledge of well, fables. I mean actual fables, fairy tales, and famous fantasy stories. (Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, the three little pigs etc.) If you have no idea who I am talking about, this book may not be for you. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed the first trade.
It is explained that the Fables (as we shall refer to them from now on) were exiled from their various story book worlds by a conquering entity whom I hope will be elaborated on in future issues. As a result they take up residence in "Mundy World" (The name they have given the mundane world of you and I). Living in secret the Fables have their own basic government system on a greatly reduced scale and a tight nit community.
Here is where the fun starts: They all don't get along. There are good folks, scumbags, harlots and scam artists. Many of the preconceptions you may have of the characters from other stories are turned on their heads.

The first trade centers around the apparent murder of one of The Fables and carries the reader through the investigation and into the very personal lives of some of the most famous story book characters of all time. There is Sex, Violence, profanity and everything else you would hope to see in a book like this. Please be advised this book is NOT for children.
The writing is witty and amusing, while also very capable of moving a serious story along. The art is pretty good but not over the top so that the reader doesn't get distracted from the story. I am definately going to pick up the next trade.

I hope this helps a bit. I didn't want to spoil the story for anyone. Also a note to Court. You may have created competition for yourself by recommending the book it is just as good as you said it was! Thanks
-CW

Sounds interesting I just might have to go hunting for a used copy to read. I am sold, we need more mature and well written comics nowadays.

ah, crap...

OK, if I didn't make my stance clear earlier. Fables itself is a very mundane title, nothing special...and I certainly wouldn't even CONSIDER collecting the artwork.

Nothing to see here, folks...move along, please. Wink

I just finished reading the first TPB. It really is a nice read. Its well thought out, had a unique take on the characters, and I really enjoyed the twists. The art was fine, while I didn't think it was great, it was par for what I expected from a Vertigo style book.

I'm looking forward to picking up the next few tpbs.

If a couple from Tennessee get a legal divorce, can they still be brother and sister?
