Ok , for the last 2 months I`ve been looking forward to "The Bunny Bash" hosted by BARP in Popham woods. Well to say I was bitterly disappointed is an understatement. I entered the HFT and Pistol comps and set off with a great shooting group of LV members. I reckon 80% of the targets were set out at 25-50yds through some of the worst woodland debris(twigs and stuff) I have ever seen, two pegs per target , which just made the progress through the course even slower. After sitting on a log for 20+ minutes in the drizzle, waiting for the next pegs to clear , and watching a so called marshal chatting to a guy with his gun slung muzzle up, I felt like spitting my dummy and just f**kin` off home. One target up a tree had moved through 90 degrees, so that it was impossible to get a 2, the marshal could not be arsed to fix it. I know this sounds like sour grapes from someone who could only score 48/80 with a springer, but by peg 15 I just wanted to finish.
So the rifles were stashed and out came the pistols, Colin and I found some sort of "Fairground shoot". We shot some targets and found that a 5.5ftlb pistol was not able to knock targets down. At this point in the rain we could have put in a couple of clear round cards, but instead tore them up and made the best decision of the day and pi**ed off home.
Oh and by the way the tea was 50p a cup.
Well thats the rant over and now the moral of this tale of woe. We have the best organized , best run, best members and most enjoyable place to shoot club that I have come across.
I hope that this note Has`nt offended anyone and helped us to appreciate LVAGC a little more.

Sorry I missed you two before you left.Yes Poppham wood has its quirks, more so this year than before, and the rain didn't help much.I was asked to be chaperoned round the course, and in doing so met Clive and his wife as we battled through the mud.Super time but wet.Basingstoke tries hard to put on a good but unique show in their own indominatable style .But know one can ever compare to the quality and scope we have at Lea Valley after all when youv'e seen the best-------?Basingstoke has its own style and with a good sunny day it is "different".We also need to keep the enthusiasm alive in air gunning and support clubs prepared to put up the effort. We as a team besides ripping off vertually all the trophies,"and a cruise"well done Dave.Try to keep the brochures away from the missus!"- got a good wedge of praise from Basingstoke in supporting them and making the day "worth while ".I liked it for the chilly sauce! BARPC shoots are always designed to be challenging and to their own rules. They do not have the luxury of a fixed base at Popham (it costs something like £150 each time they use it) so everything has to be set up from scratch every time. Also, a course set up in the sunshine on Saturday can change dramatically when it rains. It was obviously shootable with Owen & Gedas scoring 77.
The only pistol target that wouldn't drop was the squirrel in the tree - the marshalls were aware of it and gave 2 points if it moved enough. The winner scored 58 using a Crooked Barn 1740 and I scored 50, having knocked down all the 'difficult' ones apart from the squirrel.
Your point about the marshalling is valid but the rest, frankly, is just whinging.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day , apart from the weather. I have noticed that a few comps seem to get bad feedback when the weather was not good. This dosent make the place a bad venue. You only have to think back to the Ellie May shoot where The conditions were awful,Ive never seen so much mud. I am sure a few people walked away from that saying the place was terrible, just cos of bad luck with the weather.
Yes the course was tricky, but that added to the fun. If it was too easy then there would be complaints about that too.
The muzzle up issue is a bit of a concern and that was mentioned at the shoot including the safety briefing.
I agree with the problem regarding the tree target that turned 90 deg. I went for it, and yes, i was one of them that shot through the gap in the killzone. Dave and Harvy did the sensible thing and went for the safe faceplate.
My only other little gripe was hanging around at the end in the cold, soaking wet , cos the stats tent was waiting for 2 scorecards to come in. and then found out the shooters had gone home !!
Just remember we all have bad days
I take it you wont be going to the Sizzler then ?? I for one can't wait.

Winter ??? we still havent decided which 2 girls to take with us yet. Only 3 of the girls have passports, and they are the oldest ones . We would need them to babysit., If we took the 2 littluns it wouldnt really be a break would it. We could go, just the 2 of us and pay a surcharge for not being 4 people. Dave & I dont have passports either, so it could turn out to be a quite expensive 'free' cruise oh, and you have to pay £20 each port charges too.we had considered selling it and doing something that we can all enjoy. we will have to see.

............"Summer Sizzler" ..........my arse!!!
cooling down a bit now. Chronoed the gun when I got home, because of some of the targets I missed. And found the goddamn thing was doing 13.7 ftlbs.
I reckon it could be down to getting water in the breech and it being drawn into the piston. I dunno if anyone else has experienced a power jump on a HW in wet conditions.
Still stand by my remarks about the mickey mouse pistol course though.

freewind! Hw's do have a problem of being efficient. At times its difficult to keep the things in check. The new models namely HW77 and HW97 will "tune" themselves very nicely ,thank you.But you need to keep tabs on them as after 5 to 10,000 pellets you may find you need to trim the main spring by 1 to 2 coils. Just curious what was it doing before BASINGSTOKE power wise Herx77 _________________ Light is truth , beware the dark one. The night keeps on moving in on the day. |
