There is a certain advantage in knowing the oppositions score before you start to shoot,it allows you to pace yourself and dissipats the tensions usually present.

mike, your explanation above is the one that i have heard many times, but it does not make sense, it could be a disadvantage, knowing your opponents score (if it is high) could give some people the jitters, causing them to panic, or it might cause others ( seeing a low score) to be complacent.

as for seeing the course before shooting giving advantage, well for me that doesn't work either. for example, you might see a particular target that gives you concern, and then distract you from shooting the targets that come first.

as for knowing the range? well you never really know unless you measure it. and like you say, one should practice to be competitive, and if you have done so you will be able to judge the range the first time you see it, so seeing it twice shouldn't make any odds, especially when we are talking about using a different gun with different ballistics.

the way i see it any advantages gained are offset by disadvantages,
depending on the individuals mental attitude, and that should be (as with other sports) part of the challenge.

take for example, darts,full bore,small bore,archery/ the range and opponents score is known, the mental attitude adds to the skill level,
as is obvious when there is a "shoot off", a target that was hit easily during the competition suddenly becomes miss-able during the "shoot off".

your following statement seems to contradict itself.

Overall I think having shot the course once, it is to your advantage knowing the ranges(which if you are any good you will) irrespective of the type of catagory you shoot in,open sight, scope, red dot

allison dave, i think you should leave the pistol comp-rules as is,
i think they are fair, bearing in mind, different weapon/ballistics.

I shot with Sean on both the open and red dot comp. Although he "Laughingly" tried to see other scores he was not sucessfull. He shot the open sight discipline first so therefor shot red second On well battered targets, He did not know any other scores other than mine!.
Having a course change would not work because those who shot, Say, Red dot first then open sights would be shooting a different course to those who shot it the other way round.

As Alison has mentioned to me that she was there with Jonathan when the scores were comming in none of the people that re-entered saw or wanted to know what the scores were of any other entrants.

How about a gentlemans agreement amongst the main protaganists that wherever possible, they shoot the same rounds in the same sequence.

You could maybe lay out the score cards before the event and match up the shooters and disciplines as far as possible.

The Top Shots go head to head, while the rest of us keep practicing...

(I didn't realize that Pistol was so competive, I might have to get stuck in to this too)

I find having a target score a help,not hindrence,very few people I have shot with would be phased and would be able to make an advantage of it.
Good shooters use 'all' information gleaned from a course to their advantage, thats why they are good;and we are talking about 'Good'shooters here, Rolling Eyes

Whatever gun you are shooting with you will know the drop curve and be able to see by the impact the relevent distance,(or you should be able to)and from that compensat with any other gun.''Each gun especially pistols have a shot curve'' and if you get it wrong with the distance(they don't marry up)you will miss.
Shoot offs...well that is a different kettle of fish,and anything can and does happen in the next 10 minutes;just listen afterwards to the excuses. Rolling Eyes

Me, I know I will take any information I can from a course to my advantage(within the rules) Rolling Eyes

or course.
When you shoot a course you will see the impact point and from that (above explanation)whether you distance judgement is correct,if not you will then be able to compensate later on.
Personnally I'm happy to shoot to enjoy myself,and if people wish to do 2 rounds off they go, but it is interesting to develope the argument at the club as some interesting points have been raised.

Yeah, I believe it is a distinct advantage making a comment three times in a row.

After all, once you've commented the first time you then know the paragraph your typing, so when you retype it you have an idea of whats coming next, making the next post easier.

Perhaps only the first post should count, and even though you could still type the other 2 posts they do not go towards your overall post count........................ Rolling Eyes

Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear, What have we got ourselves into !!!!!!!!!.

How about Knowing where your first shot lands gives you the information to correct, (if wrong) on the following four shots !!!.
I wish my memory was good enough to remember where the target was let alone the distance, As Sean said, Targets up to 25yds are aimed "Straight on", A miss would be bad technique on aiming and pulling the trigger and, not on distance estimation..
