It's called 'offence by proxy' - someone (usually in the media) worries that someone else will be offended. This is one of my pet rants, which I won't get into now, but it happens increasingly often in this country - the 'thought police' and the 'opinion gestapo' make the rules and then make the assumption that everyone else in the country agrees with them.

The other thing that worries me about this is that I appear to be agreeing with Slappywag....
