|
|
I'm new to this, please bare with me.
My goal is to take a few clips from a home video that is on DVD and put them on youtube.
So far I've done the following:
I ripped the DVD onto my computer using DVD decrypter (end result .VOB format)
The only editing software I have is Windows Movie Maker version 5.1, SP2
So, I converted the .vob files to wmv. files with Prism video converter.
I opened the files in MM and brought the clips I wanted into the storyboard but here's the problem - when I playback the clips the quality is awful. It sounds tinny and hollow. At first I thought it was just because it was the preview. So, I finished the project anyway and uploaded to youtube and it sounded EXACTLY the same...awful!
I've spent the entire day on this and I'm about to lose my mind. I've searched for free editing software that is .wmv compatible but there's nothing out there. AVS video editor looks good but it's not free.
I really hope I can make this work using Movie Maker.
Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.
OK - I downloaded windows encoder.
I brought one of the .vob files into the program. This was about a 20 minute section (.99 GB) of the orginal video/DVD.
I set it to convert to .wmv - high quality was the default setting so I just left it that way.
The first pass took 1 hour. Then the second pass said it would take 10 hours!! This is just a 20 minute segment of the DVD. So I stopped the process and brought whatever it had finished into Windows Movie Maker. Turns out it was only 1 minute 26 seconds...that took 1 hour and 30 minutes to convert with the encoder.
Crazy! Am I doing something wrong?
The good news it that...When I brought the clips onto the storyboard in WMM - IT DID SOUND GOOD...very little loss of quality. Horray! BUT I can't spend 2 and half days processing 60 minutes of this DVD...Help??!!
so - I guess the question at this point is - should it take that long to convert with Windows Encoder? I must be doing something wrong. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much.

Hi Graham...great name! It's my 11 year old son's name.
Yes, it was set to high definition quality.
I've searched high and low for your tutorial but I've run out of places to look. So I googled for settings and this is what I found and used - I set the video to DVD quality Video 2mbps VBR and the Audio at cd quailty a 64KB VBR
Bitrate 2073kbps 29.97 640x480
It still took very long...for about 9 minutes of footage it took an hour and forty minutes.
I went ahead and edited it in movie maker. Saved it as "save movie file" so it was a .wmv file. THE QUAILTY WAS VERY GOOD...NO STRANGE TINNY SOUNDS. THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME SOLVE THAT PROBLEM.
Tried uploading to youtube but it's not working. It shows that it's loading for about 15 minutes and then a white screen appears, no confirmation. I think I'm going to try to convert it to an mp4 and see if that works.
UGH! I am tired of this...the things we do for our children! Hopefully once the video is up and running our relatives and friends will enjoy it....AND they'll have no idea how much stress and time went into it....and that a helpful stranger named Graham helped solve the problem to make it happen. lol!
Thanks for your help resolving the poor quatily sound in WMM. If you have any idea why the .wmv file won't upload to youtube ....I'm all ears!
Take Care,

Sorry I got busy and had to put this video project on hold. But - I'm back at it again.
I can't believe I overlooked that link!! lol! It was right there. Thanks!
The original file is .vob . A friend taped a performance with a digital video camera, edited with Pinnacle software and then put it on DVD. They gave me a copy of the DVD and as I mentioned, I'm trying to take scenes from the DVD and put them on youtube....what a hassel!
I did eventually get video onto youtube but I have a new problem - For some reason the output image after using windows encoder is Stretched vertically. I checked my settings and then tried changing settings but it always comes out distorted..stretched. Any idea why this is happening?
Thanks again.

I've been on holiday.....
What are the properties of the dvd disc files?
Maybe they are 16.9 and you are editing in 4.3 or the other way round? _________________ Working far too hard to keep you lot happy to be worrying about when to have the next party
