My Video Problems

Well, this website has become my video bible - so far you've given me great answers - so here's a problem I've already googled and sites such as AVforums don't seem to have an answer (partly I think because the question isn't clear, so I'll try to be clear).

I have always captured video from my DV camcorder using "Windows Import Video" with no problem. I started a new project in Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 using one of these already imported videos and it spent ages "generating peak file" and then stopped responding. Tried a few times then Googled and found a few people had the same problem. The suggested answer was that you had to capture the video using "Premiere Elements". So I tried to do this. Each time, the "capture" screen tells me "capture device offline" and does not allow me to "Get video". I can actually operate the camcorder using the capture screen's controls, but the screen remains black. I tried all the recommendations from the Adobe Help page without success, several times. Back to "Windows Import Video", no problems. I would really like to use Premiere for this project. Any ideas?

Ok, need some more info.
What is the make and model of cam?
How is it connected to pc?
What exactly do you mean by "windows import video"?
If it's windows movie maker, are you capturing as a wmv or dv.avi file?

It's a Panasonic NV-GS27EB connected with firewire. Windows Import Video is the default program from my Windows Vista computer (it just opens automatically in auto play). When I use that I capture as AVI.

Do you have any other editing programmes installed?

Sorry, haven't used vista for a while now, forgot about that. To get round the problem for the present, I think windows captures as type 1 dv.avi and it's possible that adobe uses type 2, you could try running your dv.avi through one of the convertors on this page

For the capture problem, you could try turning down your hardware acceleration and try again.

Thanks for your replies. It turns out the capture problem in Premiere Elements was a Vista compatibility problem and was solved with an update, so I finally went that route and it worked fine. PE obviously doesn't like video captured by other programs - there are loads of comments about that on the web.
