|
|
Hi Guys
I'm doing a job at work and have recorded some footage on the company camcorder - Sony DCR-sr190E. However, I'm having real problems getting the mpg files to play on my Apple Mac. It gives an error on trying to open the clips and Final Cut Pro does not recognise them either.
I read a review on the simplydv site and it says there are problems with this camera when tyring to use a mac and there are some freeware bits of software that can be used to convert them into usable files...
Does anyone know anything about this? I need to resolve this quite urgently. |

You need the Quicktime Pro key, to begin with. Then, once it's updated, Google for "MPEG Streamclip" which is a freebie utility that will convert all your VOB files to Quicktime. In fact it will convert just about anything to anything - quite the best utility of its type I've ever used.
If you want to import the resulting conversions to iMovie, export as DV Stream. For FCP/FCE use MOV.
I've used Streamclip to convert AVCHD/H.264 files and edit them in both iMovie HD and also Final Cut Express HD and it's perfect.

There's something else you have to download as well, related to Quicktime. I can't remember what it is. But the installer notes for Streamclip tell you what you need.
BTW: The SimplyDV Forums might be temporarily asleep but SimplyDV itself isn't. I read on a newsgroup/forum the other day that "SimplyDV has been shut down by its owner". That's news to me!!!
I'm working on changes to the site (but paid work keeps getting in the way) and there WILL be new forums! (Just not based on phpBB).

Is it this?
| Quote: | | For MPEG-2 playback and conversion, you need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple. |
PS Good news about SimplyDV. Good luck with the new site. |

| Guess what? I put the MPEG-2 thing on and now all the clips work and I don't need to even use that streamline program? Excellent! |

That's the birdie........ the MPEG2 Playback Component is really the interface that makes it work. I'd recommend you download MPEG Streamclip all the same.... it really is very good.

| Hmmm... the clips are playing now - and forgive me if this is a real amateur question - but there are really bad interlacing jaggies (is that what you call them?) on the clips - when I play them through QT and when I play them in FCP. What can I do to get rid of that? The final movie is for use on computer screens. |

| Okay - in final cut the clips look absolutely HORRIBLE (doesn't seem to be just jaggies but they're all ripply and wibbly wobbly too) - totally unusable but I've run one as a test through Colin's suggest MPEGStream program and saved it as DV file with de-interlacing clicked and the file has come out perfectly!!! Horay - just gonna be a right pain in the butt going through that process with all the clips! |

Yes, it is, for sure. I just wish that Apple would get its act together and service the needs of those shooting MPEG2 and MPEG4 based codecs better at the consumer / prosumer end. But, as you say, Streamclip does a good job and you really have an almost infinite choice of settings for each and every codec. It takes a while to master. (And it's a helluva lot cheaper than Sorenson Squeeze!!!).

| I've just discovered that it has a 'batch process' facility which I'm going to leave running and convert all the clips overnight. Phew. Thanks again for the help Colin. |
