My Video Problems

Just recently, after a clean install of WinXP and all available updates, all the videos that I created with WMM play choppy. Windows media player is set to drop frames to sync with music, but when I deselect this option, the video plays v e r y slowly. I've turned off hardware acceleration, both in the adapter settings and in WMP. That didn't help. I tried playing the videos in winamp: had the same problem. I've defragged the hd. No help. Videos still play with dropped frames to sync with audio. I also tried driver updates to my audio and video hardware. Those are up-to-date. I also ran Windows Memory Diagnostic and the memory checked out fine. Would you know if this is a Windows update issue? A Codec issue? My laptop is messed up? Please help. Thank you.

My laptop:
WinXP SP2
1 G Memory- 128 dedicated to video
2.4G Celeron
40 GB enhanced-IDE hard disk drive (4200 rpm)

This happens when I play .wmv files. I am using WMP 11. Should I just reinstall it? Should I uninstall/rollback first? I've checked, and it doesn't play any of the videos that used to play on it.

Some older .avi files seem to need further codecs because only the sound will play (this is after MP says that it has aquired the necessary codecs). I rely on the players to know what codecs they need. I have no idea what codecs that I would need to get. This shouldn't be this difficult, should it? Thanks!

Are these movies that you have made with MM, but are viewing in Windows Media Player?

If so, use this page o update your graphics driver

Ensure you hae the latest version of directX for your pc, there is an update to 9.0c which you can install as well.

Yes, these movies were made with Movie Maker.

I used to have problems playing video in Media Player only with video captured in .avi format with my Canon digital camera.

.asf video (from a different video camera) played fine in Media Player. Back then (prior to this last reinstall of WinXP), when I edited movies with Movie Maker, the .wmv movies would play fine. Now, all of them are choppy, including the .asf files. I have updated both the video card and direct x. Now, I'm going to reinstall media player. Wish me luck. Confused

oh man, I'm so confused.

Nothing changes. I've tried other players and they all play the video really slowly and out of sync. What could possibly change this so suddenly? I thought it was maybe a Windows Update, cuz this happens on Media Player 9 and Media Player Classic too. But, in the past MP9 never had a problem with any video playback, only MP11 did. Now they both do. They all do! The culprit is .wmv files. I know they are not corrupt. But WhAt is the problem?

I have totally uninstalled MP11. I have not reinstalled it yet. I know it won't make a difference. What I am gonna try is installing Media 9 encoder. Do you have any other suggestions? I really still feel like it was a Windows update, but I can't say which one, just a hunch. These types of things always happen to me. Crying or Very sad

Ok, this is what's happened so far...

I do not have MP11 installed. I am using MP9 for now.

I have all video acceleration turned off.

I can play the .avi files in MP9 perfectly synced to audio now. BUT all .asf and .wmv files play out of sync.

Does this info help? What are your thoughts? Am I screwed?

Do you have the latest version of windows media enoder installed, this can supply the later wmv codecs.

Yes, thank you, I have Windows Media Encoder 9 series installed.

I'd try installing WMP11.

If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall windows and start from scratch again, testing along the way as I installed updates and programes.
