For over 3 years, my camcorder and computer were very compatible. I could easily import video into Movie Maker or nero or any number of other video editing software via a firewire. All of a sudden, my last attempt to import found me unable to view video. I can control the camera from the import software, the camera plays the video, I can hear it, but when I try to import, I get an error message to check that the devices are properly configured. I changed nothing physically. I found one temporary solution online, to power everything off, then turn on camera, then power up computer. This worked once, now this trick no longer works. The only thing I can think to have caused this is an XP update of some kind. Does anyone have any information or a fix for this problem??

What xp updates have you installed?
Is it the same with all programmes?

YOu could use system restore to remove the xp update and then try again.
Or
You could test the three main components, the cam/cable and pc with three that you can see working together to ensure that none of your items ahve developed a fault.

The updates are scheduled automatically. I have restored the computer to an earlier date, I have uninstalled SP3, I have uninstalled my ieee device and let it reinstall. I purchased a new firewire cable, and the camera is functioning. I am convinced it is a conflict of some sort.

How do you know the firewire port on the pc is working?
How do you know both cables are working?
How do you know the cam is working?

If you have rolled back windows to when it was last working then we have pretty much ruled out a conflict.

Hey Skierhughes,
I'm looking for help, not to be scolded or ridiculed. I guess if I knew as much as you, I wouldn't need help. If not a conflict, and other than shooting questions back at me, do you haveany useful information???

Not ridiculing just asking questions to find answers to try and help.
If you can prove the items are working then we can start changing things on the pc, but if something is faulty and we start changing things on the pc we may never get it working again.
It's always best to rule out the easy things first, and most non-capture problems are hardware related, so if you could beg/steal/borrow another pc/cable and firewire item that you can see working together then interchange your items with each of those then you can prove that your items work.

I can only help if you give me clues as to what is happening and in order to do that I need to ask questions.

If you don't like that I'm sorry.

Try all of these items here if you just want things to try.

But I would do them in particular orders, but to do that I need to ask more questions, bit of a catch 22 situation.

In the movie maker program, I can control the camera. I can play tape, pause, FF,rew and stop. I can hear the audio from the DV, I can not preview the video (with the preview option on). Also, when I click on the start capture, the time code does not move, and the size of the file jumps to 5KB and remains there, even though I hear the video advancing. When I click on the stop capture and then finish ( to import ) I get an error message - "The video was not captured correctly. Verify that your video camera and capture device are configured properly. "

Tried this -

What to try....

With the computer off, plug firewire into camcorder, set camcorder on to play. Then turn computer on and let it power up. Open Windows Movie Maker or whatever you use to capture video go through the steps as you might normally. The video preview window will now display and record properly. Once you have the preview diplaying properly you can stop the capture process and restart if neccesary or open another app and capture there fine too. Seems like the hardware bus just gets confused initially.

And it worked once, I was able to import 40 minutes of video, the video displayed in preview window normally , the file size grew and the time codeprogressed. When I tried it again, no such luck.

I'm afraid my way of solving this problem would be to first rule out any hardware problems, so I'd still advocate testing the items with known to work items.

A bent pin in a connector could result in this happening.

Until we can absolutely rule out hardware, I see no point in trying to alter anything else.
