I think (I'm in too much of a hurry to check) that Fiona's running a dual thread on this one. We've established that we both have the same problem, vis-a-vis capture from HDV into the first implementation of Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus, and that there's a need for a patch required for ActivX in Windows XP (downloadable from Microsoft). It's a known problem which will most likely be remedied in the next update.
I still haven't solved the problem of not being able to see the video input display from the camcorder in VS11's capture window, but never mind!
I have to say that I think that Pinnacle Studio Plus 11 is the better of the two programs by far. I really don't like the interface of VS11 - although I can see the benefits for absolute newbies.

Thanks for the offer of help, Ben but luckily it's sorted now.
| Ben wrote: | | interesting the 'problem' of widescreen for you - i guess you just have to crop in post and frame accordingly when shooting - maybe tippex a mark on your viewfinder? widescreen wide is beautiful, but i can see it's too chimney-ish for stills the other way. |
... fantastic tip (I thought) but the viewfinder is too tiny to be accurate and my eye 'cleverly' magiced away a blob of blu-tack I stuck on as an experiment. So, back to creative thinking. I stupidly took on some other extra work for the next few weeks so my experimenting time with the HV20 is limited. Still, found out it's auto focusing is loads quicker than my old cam and frame grabs uploaded to Photobox rate 10/10 for print quality at 5 x 7" without any post grab jiggery pokery - wonderful. 8 x 6"s are pretty good straight from grabs too and I haven't even tried photos from a miniSD card yet.
Colin, I've found the Ulead VS11 trial version OK but it doesn't get on as well as Vegas does with the ShuttlePro and PivotPro/rotating screen I use. Trouble is, Vegas upgrade is much more expensive. I don't think there's a trial download of the Pinacle Studio Plus 11 - is that right?

Fiona, don't forget also that you have the facility of 25P progressive scan on the HV20 which will make the world of difference to your grabbed frames, especially where there's action.
This feature gave the HV20 the "match point" over the Sony HDR-HC7 in the head-to-head review I finished only yesterday for a forthcoming Digital Video magazine.
BTW - I'm now playing with the JVC Everio GZ-HD7 "Full-HD" 1920x1080 60GB HDD camcorder (whose launch I attended in Athens a while back) and it's lovely! One drawback (and a big one) is that it has no headphone socket despite good audio facilities. How mad is that?

I seem to recall that Arpe attached two bits of thread to provide guides. _________________ A side effect of everyone carrying mobile phones with cameras is that nobody ever claims to see UFOs any more. |

Fiona that is right - I checked this out on the new Pinnacle forums and got this response:
| Quote: | Hi Andy! As of the moment there still have been no official word yet as to whether we will be releasing a trial for Studio 11.

Yep - that's the main feature I bought the Hv20 for.
