Elton John
24th June 2006
Kassam Stadium, Oxford
First came the panic of how to get there. It wasn’t very clear what provision was being made for transport, but we had seen signs earlier that week for ‘Elton John Park & Ride’. So, we made our way to the nearest Park & Ride. After paying £10 for the privilege, we climbed onboard the bus which had come all the way from Southhampton for the occasion. Arriving at the stadium, there seemed to be parking, even though it had been advertised that there would be none. Oh well, at least we got there safely.
After grabbing some nachos we made our way into the stadium. Our seats were pretty well positioned, if a little far away. The only annoying thing was that the sun was directly above the stage, meaning that it practically blinded us. The music playing as we came in was quite quiet, but I thought I heard ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ and ‘We Are The Champions’ at one point.
Eventually ‘The Storys’ came on. Not really my sort of music, but I thought they were pretty good musicians. My Mum seemed to like them (which was important since this was her birthday outing). They finished and I went to buy a bottle of water, only to discover that they had run out at the only kiosk they would let us to. I managed to persuade a security guard that I really needed water and he kindly let me through to the central food court. Never got my water though, because I was only half-way down the queue when Elton came onstage.
OK, I’ve rambled enough. Now, for what you really want to hear. What was Elton like? In short, brilliant. Here are my 5 best moments of the show:
1. During Daniel when a plane happened to fly over in the distance at just the right moment
2. Rocket Man. A really long version. Some people may think it was too long, but I thought it was really great.
3. Crocodile Rock. The cartoon crocodile on the screen behind the stage was hilarious. Everyone got up and danced, including my Dad (the first time I’ve seen him actually do so voluntarily)
4. The lights for the encore were beautiful sunset tones
5. Finishing with ‘Your Song’. This is my favourite Elton song and it really made my day.
I’d also like to comment on my amazement at the number of autographs Elton signed for people on the front row. It was great to see such a big star actually take time out for his fans, even if it did mean we had to want longer for the finale.
So, I’d like to say thankyou to my Mum for inviting me along and Elton for giving us such a great night out. Thankyou. _________________ THE BIG BOSS!!!
