Can I just say first of all.......... IT WASN'T ME........... Shocked

When we were deciding where to go next year with fellow Greece lovers (as in people who adore Greece Wink ) A few people who will remain nameless for their own safety commented that Skiathos was just.... okay..... as it lacked Greek atmosphere!

Anyway as you are probably aware we have totally ignored what they said and are going to book anyway. I always prefer to make my own mind up.

So all you Skiathos Lovers tell me how much Greek atmosphere there really is Laughing

It's as Greek as anywhere I've been. Depends where you go in Skiathos, I suppose. There's plenty of traditional that sits comfortably alongside more modern places (tavernas etc.)

That's the thing. If you want to go hill wandering with a herd of goats, a satchel filled with feta and olives, and a flask of Ouzo, for two weeks without seeing another soul, it's probably not the place.

You want a reasonably accessible place, with a selection of facilities, as Foxy says, it is no less Greek then anywhere else. You want to sit on a beach with sunbed touts, water sports, expensive beer and crap food, you'll find it there, sure, as every other tourist destination in Greece. If you choose to look no further, then that is what you will find wherever you are.

Where do your former friends suggest you visit for an "authentic" Greek experience? What is their expectation of a "real" Greek place?

For sure Skiathos is a holiday resort and yes there is an established multi national community thriving on the Island but trust me the island is most defiantly Greek. Smile

First can I just say they are not former friends Laughing they are still very much my friends. I think what they mean is a place that can survive without tourists, that is not just geared up for tourists. A place that is open all year because the greek community live and work there and would still survive if all the tourist up and left....I think.

I know myself, there are greek places that i like better than others, some a lot more some a little and some I wouldn't go back to. I don't really know what it is, the traditional greek food & hospitality but also the simple way of life with no worries and "no problem" attitude. The breathtaking views and sheer beauty of a place.
I always enjoy all my Greece holidays, but I think you do need to try different places as they can vary from one side of an island to the other let alone a different island altogether.
My top 3 favourites so far are Stoupa, Kefalonia & north west Corfu. Im off to Lesvos late august and have been told its one I will go back to, so we'll see Very Happy

We have also been to Stoupa and also Chrani across the water 3 times. I like Stoupa but actualy feel this has been taken over by some of the tour companies. It used to be a very quite little seaside town with lovely beaches. I first went in 1991 and it did then have a very authentic feel. Skiathos has an all year round population of circa 4000 and even in winter Skiathos town has lots of character. OK the strictly tourist places close down but a lot of the good places still operate. The locals are much more relaxed, it's just different. As others have said before I guess we all have different expectations. We went across to the Pelion for 5 days last August which is where a lot of Greek people go for their holidays and whilst it was beautiful for a few days there was a lot of driving to do from one end to the other and it was a little too quiet for us for a longer holiday. Skiathos is compact and you can find both sides of Greece if you look.

Hi Patsy
Some parts of Mykonos are still considered as such, according to a friend of mine who happens to be gay, I've never been there though. Looked at it once but it was bloody expensive compared to other Greek destinations.

Hey - I just spent a day hiking the olive groves, with bread and fet and olives, and a bit of tsipouro to go with my water... through a herd of goats... on Skiathos. Onward to a quiet, calm beach with no one else on it.
So yes, if that is what you want to do here, it is well within your reach.

I think there is one resort in particular that is known for the lesbian community but Lesvos has now just become a greek island like any other as has mykonos although there are probably a few gay bars. We visited Mykonos (the island where Shirley Valentine was filmed) during our stay on the island of Naxos. I don't remember it just being gays or that we were in the minority, it was just a greek island.

I must admit I enjoyed the tavernas in Corfu as they did Greek dancing as well as serving food without chips!
