Taverna's:

Alexandros: We had never been to this taverna before, it was one of the best places we ate at during the holiday. Wonderful food and good music, fantastic service. My partner had the bon fillet steak he said it was one of the best he's ever had (believe me he eats a lot of it!). I had the lamb in lemon sauce with oven potatoes it was to die for. For starrter we shared the house salad which was big enough for 2 people. Prices were very reasonable at this taverna.

1901: We eat here at least once every year. Didn't think much of it last year though and I was a bit reluctant to go this year but I was so glad we did. The food was amazing and we were sat at one of the little tables at the side of it in the alley way. My partner had the indian style chicken and I had the lamb in tomato sauce both very good. To start with we had the chicken salad and garlic bread. Everything was really fresh and again excellent value for money. Had a 'photomatic' picture taken here by the rose selling man. I promised myself before I went that I'd buy one if I saw him. He's a lovely man and that's his livelihood so please support him.

Hellenikon: We went to this taverna after reading about it on this site. My partner has steak and I had slow cooked lamb with oven potatoes. They were both over cooked. This was our least favourit meal this year but having said that the standard was very high at all the taverna's and I will go again next year.

La Scuna: Another new place to us. We sat near the water were lucky to get a table by the water as nearly all of them were booked. I had chicken in white wine sauce which was a little bit bland, partner had chicken a la chef which was with onions, peppers and tomato sauce, loved it. Service was fantastic, the food was fresh, the only downside was we were both bitten on the legs as we were sat near the water and this is the only reason we didn't eat here again.

Taverna Selini: The last taverna above the old port. We had a table at the edge with fantastic views of the harbour. I had the most authentic greek food here. Dolmadies and tatziki to start, main course steak (sorry he's obsessed with it!) and I had the traditional dish of lamb stuffed with peppers, onions and feta came wrapped in foil and it was abseloutly delicious. Very reasonable prices and great service will definately eat here again.

Taverna Anemos: Next door to taverna selini. Started with the house salad which was the best salad we had on the island. It's huge definately enough to share. Parner had seak (again!) and I had the Stifado. Again fantastic views of the harbour. It was good food but we preferred taverna selini.

La Casa Di Petro: In the frront of the old port, It's owned by the same people as 1901. Would never normally eat at one of the taverna's facing the old port as we have been ripped off in the past but we met up with some friends that live on the island. Fantastic food will definately go again. They shared the fish platter for two which looked amazing. I had little burgers with salad and chips and partner had chicken souvlaki. I highly recommend this taverna.

On the first and last night of the holiday we ate at a little taverna next door to the king and queen bar in the back streets. Sorry can't remember the name of it but they do the most amazing meat on the spit and it's really cheap. We alaways eat here at least twice every year.

we had some fantastic food on the island this year. Thanks to everyone who recommended the above tavernas.

Beaches:

We always go to koukounaries. I know it gets busy but we always get there quite early about 9 o'clock when it's deserted and it's so peaceful and beautiful at that time of morning. You literally have the sea to yourself. I agree that it does get busier later on but it's fun to watch people and it's not too bad if you get one of the sunbeds right at the front. We always left just before 3, before the third boat full of people were unloaded onto the beach.

Flight Home:

Bought the tickets from the airport from Dimitri on the wednesday morning. Got the last 2 seats for the direct flight on Friday 24th with XL to manchester. Fantastic smooth flight got back half an hour before schedule. Dimitri did say though that he thought we were brave coming to the island at this time of the year without return tickets.

I really enjoyed the Island this year. I liked the fact that it was dominated by beautiful Italians. I know lots of people have complained about it being too busy but I loved that about it. There was a real buzz about the place and I will definately return in august again. For one thing the weather was fantastic it was hot and sunny every single day which was a first. On previous trips it has rained at least once and had cloudy days when we couldn't go to the beach, even in July the weather wasn't guaranteed, but I know that's why the island is so green and beautiful. My partner and I also travel around Italy every year in february. I'm going evening classes to learn Italian in September but didn't realise it will also come in handy in Skiathos!!

That's my favourite meal there as well.

Hi Twinkles

How does this 9 day/one way ticket thing work?

Do you have to buy a return to get you there, then a single on the day you want to come home?

And how do you know you are going to be able to get a ticket home?

A 10 day holiday on Skiathos would suit me perfectly--well, three of them each year, to be honest! At the moment I book 3 lots of one week at a time since I can't find any airlines which do 10 day returns.

All advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Guy
