Elle dont know what is going on but did not mean to upset you but was only pointing out that little banana was the nudist beach on the island... skiathos is not advertised as a nudist location on any site i can find? i dont have a prob with people like you who seem to respect that if people come along then you will cover up.. it is not true that the beaches that people wear clothes on are for loud yobs etc, thats so not true.. but say like ellias beach the left hand end of the beach is best for kids as the sea is very shallow and in places like this people taking there clothes off is unacceptable, but hey thats my opinion and we all have one.. i suppose it all comes back to the day with bad weather and pulling into abalaki to be told it was a nudist beach and what was i doing bringing kids there.. really i dont mind and again i suppose its the men who stand at the sea edge and turn one way then the other that upset me..

Elle

I think many of your points are well put and I wholeheartedly agree but the fact remains civilised society has decency laws. Personally, wherever I have travelled in the world I have yet to encounter a socially developed nation which condones public nudity. As democracies we vote and we choose to remain here. I personally don't pick and choose which laws I agree with and, just because a law is policed ineffectually its does not mean that law does not exist. We have a police force for a reason, it is to police the laws which have been passed.

I accept that the beaches are publicised as naturist but I have yet to see them officially sanctioned as such - please correct me if I am in error.

I can only speak from a personal viewpoint but I would not like to come across either individual mentioned in your example, one being illegal and the other unpleasant.

As to people who live on Skiathos - again I speak personally, I have chosen to make my life here and, as a Greek resident have a little more idea of the methodology of living here than someone who visits occasionally.

However much respect we have for people does not give us the right to visit their country and flout their laws and customs..I do not aim this at anyone in particular, I aim this at us all. If you do not agree with the way a country legislates then do not visit.

I too never wish to offend.

All beaches in Denmark are public, indeed it is forbidden by law to prevent people from wandering along the coastline. Clothing is optional on all beaches in Denmark, as such, all are nudist. That doesn't mean that everyone on every beach is un-attired of course, but it is not uncommon to find a few nudes doted along a beach.

In Scandinavia, people by and large don't have hangups about nudity. This applies to kids as well. If kids are bought up with nudity as "nothing special", then they don't regard it as such. If you hide everything from them, then grandma wanders down the beach with nothing on, it is "shocking", but the "harm" has been done before they ever reached the beach in my opinion.

There are officailly designated beaches in England where clothing is optional. I recall there being one such in Brighton, Sussex. There are probably others.

I have never felt the need to shed everything, but don't care if others do.

Civilized society gives options... thank God we don't live in the dark ages still. Here in the US,. there are many, many places designated clothing optional. Peaceful people, no fights, quiet, respectful.

We raised our daughter, alongside friends raising their own children, to not be afraid or ashamed of the naked human body. They've all grown up without hangups about nudity, there is no surprise in a nude drawing class or seeing grandpa skipping over the rocks naked at the river. They are raising their own children the same. It doesn't mean they parade down the street or wherever they want, naked. It means that they find the nude form natural, unsurprising, no problem.

Most European countries are far more relaxed about it than we are. I think that the world might well be a better place (for children and for women) were the 'oohh la la, hey baby' letch factor taken out of the mere sight of a naked body. And then people would take the time they spend on sexually harrassing people or being offended, and put it somewhere constructive.

Laws are laws, yes, and many of them have been proven to be ridiculous. (Like some bizarre law still on the books somewhere in Wisconsin or some such state that deems that a man may not have a moustache when he marries... Ok then.) I do not hold nudity laws in the same esteem that I hold 'do not steal', 'do not kill', 'do not sell drugs' and am glad that police don't spend a hell of alot of time chasing offenders of nudity laws down and throwing them in the clink to take up what little space there is left in between the child molesters and dog torturers.

If anyone has any question about whether or not Banana Beach is officially sanctioned, ask the Skiathos Police. You will find, as we did when we asked a friend who was a policeman there in '87, that it is.

And...
Po po po, who cares, with the wave of a hand.

We are all entitled to our opinion, and while I honor yours, Woodmonkey - I do take offense at your condescending attitude.

Shepre, thank you.. we will no doubt be back again and again and you will find us singing somewhere on the island, someday! Perhaps when we are living there as old wrinkly (nudies).
We've just put up a myspace page - argh, it's a young persons' world but for business sake (and therefore, more opportunity for us to visit Skiathos more frequently!) we had to do it.
It's in process, but it is here if you're interested...
