| What would be the best car to hire for getting up really steep hills? Would it be a jeep? if so, which type. Also if we got a jeep how many cases would it hold with 3 people in it? |

No cars! To get around off the beaten track on Skiathos you really need a Jeep and you can use the low gears for the steep hills. You will probably only be able to get a Suzuki Jimny from the hire companies on the island. You should be able to get two large cases or three smaller cases as well as 3 people in it with a bit of a squeeze for the one in the back.

Caution,
If you hire a car you should stay on the main road as you will almost certainly not be insured for damage underneath the vehicle.
Our best advice is if you intend to go exploring then you should hire a Jimmy or similar and from a reputable company to which there are many links on this site to help you decide. As for space in your Jeep I wouldn’t really worry as it may be a little cramped but your journey will be short and slow.
To give you an idea this year we watched as 5 people managed to get into a 2 seater Smart Car pity I never had my camera.

I have just dug out my receipt from last year and from 31st August until 13 September 07 (14 days), we paid €455. Victoria Car Rental in Troulos usually have a deal on which is 7 days for the price of 4 or 14 days for the price of 10, so it may work out cheaper to hire it for a week. Unless of course you only want one for the day!
I think that would work out at about €45 a day.

In previous years we have hired Suzuki Samurais but last year we had a Jimny because all the Samurais had gone.
I would recommend the Samurai. Although it is less plush (if either jeeps can be described as plush) it is more sturdy and the engine and gearbox seemed to cope better.
The Jimny had trouble getting 4 adult sized people up the hill where we were staying and there was often a smell of burning by the time we reached half way (reckon the clutch didn't last long after we'd gone) - and it was a brand new car. Reckon those cars don't last long  |
