I came back from two weeks in Crete earlier this week which I wasn't looking forward to. All year I have been looking at the webcam and thinking why we weren't visiting Skiathos again. Then Mamma Mia came out and it made the feeling worse!
I have to say that we had a great holiday, saw some amazing sights, visited some fascinating places and it all worked out at about £600 less than our two weeks in Koukounaries cost last year.
I was looking forward to spending (no pun intended) next year back on Skiathos for the tenth time but can no longer justify the prices charged across the board, not just the travel operators costs. I love the place dearly (there goes another) but cannot see myself coming back until the kids are paying their own fare
Ah well, I'll see some of you in the going somewhere else thread when it starts up unless I win the lottery or become as rich as Suejet who I notice is on holiday AGAIN!! |

Haven't been to Skiathos yet - hoping to go next year. What do you mean by expensive? Is it the cost of travelling there and accommodation, or cost of meals etc when there?
Also, where did you go to in Crete - sounds as though you enjoyed it. |

Skiathos has always been a bit pricy compared with other destinations’ both in Greece and out of Greece and I'm not sure if it will ever change.
As one economy fails to pay the price another will fill that gap.
Some saying Skiathos is ready to self destruct but they've been saying that for a very long time and they keep hiking those prices.

That is what worries me most. At some point enough will be enough and that will be it.
Flight prices are basically a cartel because no matter which charter you look at they are all a couple of pounds between them. Fewer flights mean higher seat prices.
I have to say that I was amazed how few Britons were in Crete, Chania is down to one flight per week out of Manchester this season and the beaches were practically empty once the Greeks went back to work after the 15th weekend celebrations. |

It's a combination of prices really. You should go anyway because you are missing a gem if you don't. Everyone should experience Skiathos at least once - can't explain why. There are no timeless little Greek villages, no ancient historical sites and yet there is something just magical about the place.
Oh yeah, went about 7km from Chania and visited Elafonisi Beach, Samaria Gorge, Falasarna (I think!), Lake Kournes, Chania and loads of beaches inbetween. Met those two blokes of A Place in Greece outside a cafe in Almyrida and read a book called the Cretan Runner, memoirs of a resistance fighter, then bored the kids by driving to all the mountain villages mentioned in the book to look at them. Saw two Greek weddings and one funeral high in the mountains in a village of about thirty houses. There were hundreds of people there.
Almost got caught out by a threatened petrol strike when the west of the island ran out of fuel as it is 1.24 euro a litre now.
All this in two weeks - I'm knackered! |

look now,
i went to Crete, some 25 years ago, and i spend 6 months there with my motorcycle as a beach bum.
all your stories brought me back many memories and i still vividly remember all my doings.
later in my life i visited south Africa and man , i had the best time of my life as for 2 months i visited all these great places and i consider myself as the best ambassador to be awarded a metal from their ministry of tourism, from all my talks urging people to visit.
BUT THIS HERE PLACE IS A SKIATHOS FORUM |

Let's face it guys, Travel isn’t going to get any cheaper!
So no matter where you go it's going to cost you more.
You can't even walk to Skiathos or could you |

Skidsy what did you think of Elofinisi Beach is the sand still pink????? Did you have to wade through the sea to get to the main beach? I love that beach and the journey there stopping off for coffee on the way in some lovely villages. Also liked Kalives. Had better shut up now befor I am told off about This being a Skiathos Forum..... _________________ Karen&Phil

apologies,
it was rude of me to make this comments about THIS IS A SKIATHOS FORUM.
BUT i have traveled, like you have i am sure, in many exotic places, and have found many hidden unexpected paradises.
during my 6 months in Crete i had both pleasures and pain (got beaten up by 5 drunk local idiots and all my belongings got stolen as well on another occasion)
i can recommend the use of a vehicle since it is a very large island and unfortunately i know for a fact it has grown so touristic that some places like mallia, hersonisos, agios nicolaos, vai, plakias and many others are to best be avoided.
i have been to chania, it took me 3 days to recover from the august crossing of the samaria gorge, have been to elafonissos ( amazing sand and very swallow) and i wont forget stories like the invitation i got upon my driving from a little village up the mountains to a wedding taking place. or the young 4 year old girl that came running and giving a flower to my partner but then asking for a drachma from me..........
or the plateau up in the mountains with the windmills and the lovely caves, great special local food as well.
or the time i got to visit this monastery and i had to do a run to their toilet , to find that instead of the normal loo paper they had only the catholic bible available....
fate brought me to many other islands as well, either the very popular like myconos, poros aigina, paros, naxos, santorini, rodos, ios idra, spetses..... i can go on forever .and a few lost in time like astypalia.
you see ,on my youth, i considered skiathos a bit boring and only good for families.
my grandfather here didn't really approve on all my galvanizing.
so i explored
but on all my trips i couldn't help but to compare my island to every place i visited, and truthfully i couldn't find another place that i liked better
than skiathos

So, your grandfather was unhappy every time you put on a protective cover? |
