how one can tell if a fish is fresh or frozen?
one way its from the taste, but one should be a specialist to be able to do this.
another way is from the midle large bone(spine) : on the frozen fish it comes out easily and lives a black mark on the meat.
the common and easiest way though is from the fishes eyes.
on the fresh fish they are crystal clear and on the frozen misty.
the price of the frozen fish is about 2/3 less than the fresh.
so heres my story:
some years back, july, i were welding and a young lad who was helping me didnt follow my advice to close his eyes , so by nightfall he was crying in agony. after the 4th pharmasist"s out of eye drops answer!! i asked: what the heck, is there an eye epidemic on skiathos?no came the answer didnt you know the tavernas use eye drops on their fish??!!!!!!!!
for many years we used to eat fresh fish in katigiorgis vilage on the main land across from banana beach(10 min drive whith a speedboat) and they were wonderfull and very cheep.
now days they still are wonderfull but as expensive as skiathos.
at least they are guarenty to be fresh.
fangri(red porgi)
synagrida(dentex)
sargos(two banded seabream)
scorpionfish
and many others are too expensive for me to eat out and i only get to taste them when i catch them and cook them at home.
on the other hand though i can strongly recoment the cheep popular common fish such as
sardelles(sardines)
gavros(white bait)
kopaneli(tuna)
and some others which are inexpensive but very healthy and tastefull.
most tavernas have them on their menu at 5-7 euros per plate.

Well for the first time I managed to try Magic fish a migrant fish that is only available in May and sometimes early June and I knew it was fresh as I had seen it hanging in door way of Tavern Alexandros that evening.

One word, Wonderful.
