lol sorry if ive ranted on abit its like a journal too, enjoy...
Who went:- me, mike and my son hayden who is 8, our second time to skiathos and haydens first
where we stayed :- Hermes appartments/studios, Kolios
When:- 9th to the 16th May 2007
best bit of holiday = all of it, the beaches, people we met, food, pool, and seeing the dolphins on the boat trip!!!!
worst bits = lots of jellyfish!!! lol. Also my hair disaster on the boat trip..lol
Day 1 weds:-
flew out from Manchester FCA2352, at 15:00, instead of 13:40...was delayed over an hour
Flight went smoothly and no turbulence(im a very nervous flyer) was sat on left handside and saw the windmill and town as we landed, fab. Landed around 7:15pmish. Cannot fault skiathos airport one bit. As last year, luggage was on the carosuel within 10 minutes of us landing and straight onto our coaches, no problems. Weather was lovely when we arrived.
Got to Hermes at Kolios around 8pm. It was great to be back. The appartments were fantastic. We had a wander around to get our bearings and had a snack at the bar/taverna. Met a lovely couple of ladies who were on our flight who we watched the football with (man utd fans lol)
went back to appartment and sat on balcony. Went to bed around 11pm. Got woken up at around 2am by this weird bird chattering and singing which was funny for that time of morning. It was right outside our balcony and driving me mad lol
Day 2 - thurs
got up around 7am, it was warm already, clear blue skies. We had our breakie then hayden and mike went in pool for a bit, then around half 10 had a wander down to Vromlominos beach, after working out where it was, its about a 10min/800m walk from Hermes, you just walk up and over this road and past this swamp and your there. It was SO quiet, we couldnt believe it, and also the taverna was shut too, and no sun loungers. I was expecting it to be really busy already and i was shocked. Also we needed a beach where a taverna was open so we could eat and get drinks. So we decided to go to Troulous beach for the day, got on bus, got there, a bit busier but just like september, enjoyed a good day there. All the tavernas were open at Troulos. Weather was in the high 20's, low 30s, very hot. Slight breeze. We then got taxi back to Hermes and went in pool for a bit then to town. We ate at Nikos taverna, which was nice, we ate their last year, i had moussaka and hayden had pizza, mike tried the stiffado which he liked. We stayed in town until about 8pm had a wander round to the old port to see what boat trips there were, decided to go on the Agios Nikolas on the monday.
Day 3 - friday
Got up early 7am, bright clear blue skies again. Had breakfast at Hermes then decided to chill round the pool, then we got on the bus and got off at Koukanaries and decided to find the beach called Abelakia (xenia) after seeing the pics on the beach forum. We had also made a packed lunch and took that with us, as after seeing Vrom taverna shut we were worried about places being open for drinks and food, so we made our own. We found xenia alright, wow what a gorgeuos beach, and we had it ALL to ourselves!!!! i couldnt believe it. It was a bit of a trekky walk down some stairs, going round the back of the old hotel xenia then down. We went round the corner of the beach and theres a little cove bit and we stayed there all day until around 4pm. The water is so turquoise and clear. Did lots of swimming. Weather was red hot, must have been in the 30s. No wind hardly. Time goes quickly when your having fun. We noticed there was some jellyfish floating around, i saw one, then there was loads, all of the same variety (white moon type ones), hayden had fun studying them in his bucket after catching them in his net.
We then went back to appartments and had a swim then went to town again and got some stuff, ate at portobellos (gorgeuos!). Hayden got some much wanted yu-gi-oh and pokemon cards from the toy shop.
day 4 - saturday
Got up early, had swim. We decided to walk around to kolios beach from our appartments to see what it was like there. We werent as keen, so we walked back around to Vrom expecting it to be quiet again.... we much prefer vrom to kolios beach. We got there and it was so different in the space of 2 days - the taverna was open and a few sunloungers had been put out! But it was still VERY quiet. Only a few people about. We stayed there most of the day, i enjoyed walking round the rocks and jumping in the gorgueos clear water much to haydens amusement to the right of the beach. Hayden enjoyed catching fish with his net and yet again there was a few jellyfish floating around which we were wary of. (They were of the same variety but later on during the week we saw more kinds). I Did some snorkelling and saw lots of fish, and jellyfish up close lol. Stayed there all day. Weather clear blue skies and in high 20s, no wind hardly.
Got back and realised I had burnt my scalp (lol) so went to town and got a hat, ate out at the harbour old port taverna which was quite expensive and i was a bit shocked at the price for 3 pizzas lol. But it was still a lovely place. Went to a few shops, one of them had the weather forecast on and it said 34.c for mainland/ 32.c for islands. The man in the shop said they were praying for rain...we wernt lol!!! Stayed in town till about 10pm
Day 5 sunday
We decided to try a different beach and went to Achladias/Hotel Esperides beach, really liked it, it was a little more busier than the other beaches probably because of the hotel etc, but really nice. I like the sunloungers there too, they have a little table in the middle of them for you to put your suncreams on etc, for 8euros. It was hot, in the 30s and a little breeze. The sand was BOILING it was a matter of ouch ouch ouch walking back trying to get onto the pavement, lol. Didnt notice any jellyfish in the water here. Got back to hermes went to pool for a bit, then me and hayden had a wander round to Nostos/knapitsa beach to the left of Hermes on the road, wasnt keen, it was nice but we stayed for an hour or so catching fish. Went back to hermes for some tea, then at 8pm we went to Vromlominos for the sunset and swim, it was absoulutely beautifull, the sea was still warm too, it really was nice and i recommend it, we were the only people there on the beach too, apart from the guy who owns the taverna, he has a greek flag tattoo on his chest, he had fun showing hayden how to throw the pebbles and make them skim the water,
Day 6 Monday
Got up 6am watched sunrise, then had breakfast at hermes and got to town for 8:15am, to get on the Agios Nikolas boat trip early for a good place. We got on the boat around 9am and it was filling up already but we got a good seat upstairs outside .So get there really early if you want a good seat. However, the wind had picked up and it was REALLY windy sitting outside on the top deck, especially between the islands. And id not put my hair up either, you should have seen the knots.... it took me an hour to brush it and get them out
It was a brilliant day, highly recommended. We did the No1 cruise to skopelos and alonnissos. We thought we were doing the other one that visited the beaches and has swim stops, but when we got there they said that was sunday, but we wernt bothered as we were still going to the other islands. The rep on the boat was fab, cant remember her name but she is from sweden and has lived on skiathos 12years, lucky thing, she was great. We saw dolphins 3 times, it was fantastic, so amazing, they were mainly inbetween alonnissos and skopelos, but just when we thought they were no more to be seen when we were heading back to skiathos they were there again, about 8 of them under the front of the boat, it was amazing, definately one of the best bits of our hol !!! the other islands were nice, but nowhere near as nice as skiathos, alonnissos harbour was very nice, and i enjoyed the walk through skopelos town. The weather had been glorious all day, clearblue skies and hot. The sea was a bit choppy on the way back from skopelos.
Got back at 6pm, went round town for a bit then went back to hermes for a late tea. Would highly recommend the Agios nikolas boat trip. We are going on it again if we go in august. Its 25euros per adult, and children under 8 free, we just managed it with hayden.
Day 7 Tuesday
Got up a bit late as we were tired lol. Decided to have our last full beach day at Abelakia or banana. Got bus and walked to banana, not happy, they were still messing with the taverna and it was just offputting, the beach itself looked gorgeuos as always and no one was there, but we decided to head round to Abelakia/xenia again, when we got there it was quiet again just one couple at the far end, but the water was a bit choppy and it was a bit windier than before so it wasnt as nice to swim in the sea, a bit wavey. There was also more jellyfish around, different kinds.
Stayed there until 3pm ish, got back to hermes had a swim in pool, got showered and changed and went onto Troulous to Christakis sports bar for a few and then next door to Villa Rosa for our last meal, we stayed there last sept, it was gorgeuos, well recommened
Last day
Had to be out of the apartments by 11am to be picked up at 6pm. We decided to go to Vromlominos beach for most of the day and be back for 3pm. It was a gorgeuos hot day, clearblue skies again, but LOADS of jellyfish in the water today, we counted 25 in one area, and about 4 different species of jellyfish, very strange tube like ones with red ends on which looked like they could zap you. Didnt go in the water much, was very wary. Got back to the apartments for about 3:30pm, one last swim in pool then had a bite to eat got showered, then it was bye bye to hermes , coach picked us up at 6pm on time. We flew back at 20:25pm on time, flight was a bit turbulent coming back much to my panic, but wasnt as bad as the florida flight, we landed at a very NAFF wet and windy manchester at 10pm
