|
|
We were on the Marine Cruise on Wednesday and I thought I was in for a lovely sunset, then I realised it looked like Skiathos was on fire! Only when we got closer did someone confirm it was mainland and probably Pelion.
This was a view just out of Skopelos.

As we got closer the smoke was thicker, but luckily the wind was blowing away from us.
This was the approach to the old port
And then the view from the balcony.

I'm working in Afissos on Pelion and drove down towards Melina last night after picking up people from Volos Airport.
The area affected was about 10 times that of the Skiathos fire, but apart from a small monastery, where the nuns had to hitch up their habits and run, and some some remote farm buildings, occupied by goats with dirty habits, not much property was damaged. However, thousands of fruit and olive trees, on which many of the population depend for their livelyhoods, were destroyed. A big concern is the probability of soil erosion when the winter rains come, and the amount of salt water dumped everywhere.
However, the rest of Pelion is as beautiful as ever, and as an ex long term resident of Skiathos, I recommend this area if you want a quiter place that is still really "Greece". |

Great panorama Sundance.
All of a sudden it doesnt seem the same talking about having nice photos of fire after the island itself catching fire. |

Ooops must scroll up next time, nice photo's Pat!
On reading through it again its true how salt left from dousing the flames and rain in the winter may bring further problems in the future.
Fingers crossed that the soil on the island is very rich in all the things it should be.

Off to the west of Ireland in the morning to listen to some Irish music at the Joe Mooney summer school of Traditional Irish Music, hoping that the weather will pick up, as they have had nothing but rain for many weeks, and that some rain can fall on Greece to dampen the fires.
