I directed my wife to Abelakia by phone last night and today she phoned from there and has vowed to go every day till she returns.
Apparently there was a naked couple at one end, isn't big and small banana beaches enough for some people ? i don't have a problem with it but i think that when there are kids on the beach and there were, a bit of savvy is in order.

Hi Bladerunner , I'm really pleased your wife is loving Abelakia, it's a wonderful beach. When I first posted this thread it wasn't to promote Abelakia as the next nudist beach, far from it.

It was to introduce the beach as a great place to visit to find good food, a very warm welcome and enjoy a very peaceful atmosphere, the way Banana used to be several years ago.

I am not surprised your wife has decided to return every day, we will spend most of our time in September on Abelakia.

Hi Kriandos, of course i realise that, we used to spend lots of time on big banana and then slowly over time a few nudists started appearing far left, and then on our last visit there were old guys strolling up and down all over the place, and when you have young teenage girls and your mother -in-law in tow it becomes uncomfortable for them so you feel obliged to vacate and find another beach.
I used to visit the old hotel go through and look at the views from the old apts over kouk beach, that hotel must have been magnificent in it's heyday with it's own beach, but it would take a lottery winner to buy it now.
Without this thread my wife would never have found it, so thanks for that.

Chelleb is exactly right about the ownership of the Xenia. It was part of a Greek government project to cash in on the tourism boom-- in the 70's, I think. The New York Times had an article this spring (with photos of the Xenia) on the history of this chain. They are all up for private sale. The Xenia could be really, really cool.

By the way, I never knew the name of the beach. I just always called it the Xenia beach. Even though the steps are a bitch, parking is a breeze.

We have no kids wiv us, we are very quiet people and promise with hand on heart to behave also we are not there at the same time as Hippy Chick so please please tell me how to get to this beach - it sounds perfect, especially when we have to travel in school holidays, now you can feel sad for us. Please give us easy directions (never been before remember) from Piscine Palace in Skiathos Town. We just want to go and laze around and eat nice food and drink nice alcoholic drinks. I promise I wont tell anyone else how to get there. Honest.

Hi Jackieboo,

opposite the very last bus stop in Koukounaries and next to the small kiosk is a steep path.

Follow this path for about 50/60 yards and you will see another path off to the left with a sign for Abelekia.

At the top of this path is a ruined hotel, if you walk around to the right of it you will see a steep path with steps leading down to the beach.

It's hard going in the midday heat but worth the effort ,hope this helps.

Thank you so much. I cant be any harder than getting down to St Paul's Bay in Rhodes or the beaches in Lindos - they were really bad to climb back up to.

This place is indeed the place to be. Relaxed, great food, lovely people sensibly spaced beds and brollies if you want them and room to move if you don't. Get down there and see the sunrise then have a swim. The highlight of my holiday.
