Just got back Fantastic time as per usual. The island is as beautiful as ever, had a couple of dodgy days weatherwise, it was raining when we left at 4.30 this aft, but to be expected at this time of year.
Roll on next year! |

That is IT?
No more detail?
Come on, now, we ALL know it's fantastic!
What did you do, where did you go, where and what did you eat....
what beaches, what excursions, did you see any filming...
where did you stay...
more, please! _________________ "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.

I just got back after a week (too short!) and enjoyed lazy days on Little Banana, a very wet day on Sunday, but spotted Pierce Brosnan and his 2 youngsters sitting at a cafe in PapaD, looking very smart but apparently watching the world go by, like everyone else. Old Yianni on LB was celebrating his birthday yesterday, he said he was 50... Ate at Sellini, Dino's, Niko's, Alexandros, Maria's, Mouria, the Ouzerie(sp?) and Amfiliki, all pretty fab. Lunch at Little B was a bit erratic, as some days started off cloudy and Stelios decided not to stock up on provisions. One day he'd run out of beer, water and food, apart from chocolate croissants! We spent evenings after dinner in Bar Destiny, mostly, but also Kentavros, Rooftop and Main Street. Seemed quite a bit quieter than usual, and I thought prices were probably lower than in 2004, the last time I was there. Bus journeys were so exciting I wonder why anyone takes a taxi or hires a car! All in all I had a great time and really want to go back next year - 3 years is too long to be away from Skiathos! |

Sorry, was a bit tired last night! Hope I don't bore anyone to death.
We stayed at the Thanos Apts in Troulos. Lovely little "complex", pool, bar, restaurant, supermarket, everything you need. We had a two-bed apartment which was right in front of the pool. Little bit more basic than anywhere else we have stayed before but the staff were very friendly, especially Stavros, the owner, and Dan (ex Kosmar rep).
We hired a jeep for the whole week which meant we could visit different beaches, eat in various places and go off up into the hills when we felt like it. The beaches we visited:
Troulos on several occasions - our favourite this year
Vromolimnos - too many wasps
Elias - for the big waves
Abelikia - lovely little beach, long way back up the steps in the heat!
We gave Koukounaries a miss this year as it was far too busy. We drove to Kechria, Nikotsaras (totally deserted apart from the goats half way up the cliff) and Mandraki for a look and to take photos but didn't stay as the weather wasn't great.
We say every year that we should try new eating places but always end up returning to our favourite haunts. It's partly my fault, I meant to write a list from this forum of recommended restaurants but was too busy getting ready for my hols (you know the usual, painting my nails, straightening my hair, etc ) and ran out of time. We ate at:
Vareli's in Troulos - the Exohiko wasn't as good as last year but still nice
1901 in town - can't fault it, beautiful setting, wonderful food. I had the same as I have every year, the chicken & spinach crepe with hollandaise sauce (to die for) and I think I had stuffed chicken for main but the starter is incredibly filling.
Nectar & Ambrosia, Troulos - busy as ever, bit expensive but nice meal, I do like their moussaka
La Torre in town - quick pizza, no complaints
Infinity Blue - never been here before so thought we'd give it a try. Was ok, wouldn't have said the meal was spectacular. The waiters were a bit too quick to remove empty plates while others were still eating which I don't like.
The restaurant by The Muses in Kouk - we ate there a couple of years ago & weren't impressed but it was the busiest place that evening so thought we'd try again. Overall the meal was very nice, I had Chicken Souvlaki, my other half had chicken fillet in red wine & tomato sauce. Our only complaint was they were both too salty and we were up drinking water all night!
Our last night & we ended up at Taverna Selini above the old port in town. I would've liked to try any of the restaurants up the steps from the church square but I do not like being chased up the street by somebody trying to drag you into their establishment. Even if I was planning on eating there that puts me right off. Taverna Selini was the only place that didn't hassle us. Food was nice, I had Kleftiko. Only problem was there was a really cold wind blowing and I was frozen, which doesn't really help when you are trying to enjoy a relaxed meal!
As previously mentioned, we had the odd bad day with the weather. It was scorching when we arrived on the Friday which continued into Saturday, it was very difficult sleeping. Sunday we awoke to rain & grey clouds which hung about pretty much most of the day. After that it seemed to cool off a bit and we had a couple of half days that were cloudy but the sun came out later. We didn't mind as we wandered round Skiathos Town. When we left yesterday it was red hot for a couple of hours first thing in the morning (managed a last hour sunbathing!) but then clouded over and was raining when we left. I think it was warmer when we landed in Manchester!!!
I think they were filming in town on the Saturday evening. There were stacks of people & vehicles milling about the new harbour. By the time we'd finished eating it had all cleared away so no we didn't actually see any filming. We did see a huge boat in the old harbour, Quintessa it was called, v posh. It had at least four "bodyguards" round it not letting people near so I think Pierce & Co must've been on there. Does anyone know anything about this?
Finally, as we got to the airport yesterday to check in there was a letter on the check-in desk saying that the XL flight was severley delayed and so they had sent a Flyjet plane for our journey home. I suppose we should be grateful we didn't have to sit out this "severe delay" but I wasn't impressed with Flyjet. The seats had no leg room, even worse than any charter flight we have flown on before. There was no TV all flight, and no hot drinks so we didn't get a drink with our meal. I would've thought with all the advice about drinking plenty liquids while flying they could have at least offered us a free bottle of water to make up for this. Then when we landed at Manchester we had to land at Terminal 1 which was Flyjet's Terminal. It took us half an hour to get off the plane as we had to wait for a bus to take us to Terminal 2 where we should have landed with XL.
All in all we had a great week yet again. We've never holidayed in the same place more than once, except Skiathos. I don't know what it is about the place, I always leave with a heavy heart. |

Christine .... the buses are excellent but if you want to explore anything other than the south coast resorts, the buses dont take you there. You need a car or jeep to explore the most wonderful, amazing, QUIET beaches on the north side of the island. _________________ www.ClearSpray.co.uk |

Hi Christine, yes I know about exploring the rest of the island in a jeep (and by boat), but the bus journey never failed to entertain us and some of the conductors are a comedy act in their own right! |
