Hubby & I have just got back after a few days off the island visiting Greek friends from Skiathos at their winter home in Trikala on the mainland. The wonderfully welcoming & generous hospitality they offered was touching. Had a fabulous time there & finally got around to a trip to Meteora. Words cannot describe how breath-takingly stunning & absolutely amazing this place is, why this is not amongst the wonders of the world is beyond me! How these beautiful monastries dating back upto 700 yrs were built on top of these stone pillars is unimaginable! The photos I have posted really do not do it justice! Most of the tour operators here do organised day trips there, if you get the opportunity I would definately recommend a visit!

Hi Lindyloo
Forgive me for being thick, but are you saying you can visit these monasteries from Skiathos?
If the answer is yes, how long does it take to get there and how much does it cost roughly. If the answer is No please forgive me and be thankful you are not thick like me.
Just seen a Keith Floyd repeat where he visits this place and he too is greatly impressed with them saying a lot of places you visit in the world are anti climaxes, this was definately not one of them !
Thanks Gary _________________ Greece is the word ! |

Sounds like you've had a great trip.

Hi Discopants, most of the tour operators incl Olympic, Kosmar offer a one day excursion to Meteora. It is at least a 12hr day, setting out early on the flying dolphin or catamaran, crossing to Volos appx 1/2hr then being met by a coach at the other end which will take you to Kalambaka where Meteora is situated, this journey taking 2-2 1/2hrs I would guess, took us appx 1 1/2 in car. Well worth it when you get there! You normally arrive back in Skiathos around 9pm, cost is appx 100euro per person.
Don't be fooled by the blue skies in the pic there was snow on the mountains & a definate nip in the air!
Disappointed I missed the Keith Floyd prog, would have been interesting to see, however there is no substitute for the real thing!!! _________________ για μας; |

Here is a pic looking across Kalambaka towards the mountains from Meteora, you can see the snow on the tops!

| We did this day trip from Skiathos a few years ago and the sights just blew us away. It's like nothing else we have ever seen. It is a very long tiring trip but worth every minute. The village of Kalalbaka is surrounded by rocks on all sides and is a fantastic sight. If you go to your welcome meetings (we don't anymore) the rep will offer this trip and don't be put off by it being a long journey. |

Thanks Lindy
We will look this trip up. I feel it's one of those once in a lifetime trips. You may never be so close again so do it.
We visited Cyprus a couple of years ago and did the day flight to Cairo to see the Pyramids,Sphynx and Egyptian Museum, Tut and all his gear!
People said don't do it it's too tiring ! It was a 6am start and a 1am finish.
It has stayed with us. W e will do this one.We might never get a better chance. Thanks !

It really is a fantastic trip and well worth the long day.
I don't have a head for heights, but was overwhelmed and really pleased with myself at what I had achieved.
Sitting in the monastary courtyard with the smell of gardenia was fantastic, too.
The coach from Volos stops for a meal break, so you need to stock up on water there, if you need to, as the tour of the monastaries is before you co into Kalambaka for a late lunch.
You can book trips from the ferry ticket office at the bottom of Papadiamantis. _________________ To dance beneath a diamond sky with one hand waving free..... |
