Good Morning, My wife and I spent 3 years learning Greek at our local college here in Chester.

We then visited Skiathos to look for property and while there we were advised that summers on Skiathos were great, but......winters were wet, cold and very boring.

We then visited a small Spanish town called Rojales just south of Alicante and eventually bought a bungalow there. We bought mainly because all year round sunshine sounded great. The sad thing is we both still anchor after Skiathos and would still rather have a place there rather than in Spain. We would welcome any bodies view on here regarding the practicalities of owning a home on the island and what the island is like during the "winter months" Thanks everyone, when Skiathos bites you you just stay bitten.

We bought a house on the island about 18 months ago and have visited several times out of season. We love it. It is quiet but has a different charm!

After visiting Skiathos for over 20 years we like many eventually bought a house there to, winters can be cold and wet with even some snow thrown in for good measures that’s if you lucky, you may even get stuck due to bad weather but unfortunately not this year. This year was a mild one take February we stocked up on logs expecting it to be cold then ended up sitting on the harbour most days in the sun waiting for our lunch to be delivered by the fishing boat this was escorted by dolphins and seagulls as it came into the harbour, there was also time to catch up on local gossip who, why and where stuff not to be taken to seriously.
Getting to and from the island in winter is another challenge as there are no direct flights and after you have travelled backwards and forwards so many times the novelty begins to ware thin but the calling is still as strong now as it ever was . I personally think winter or out of season, October-April are the best times to see the real Skiathos no matter what the weather, old friends are reunited in the peace and tranquillity of the winter.
Skiathos is a place where tourists go to play in the summer and a where the local people recover from the summer during the winter like living on two very different islands and how lucky is that.
No mater where you are in the Mediterranean I’m sure it’s a similar feeling but winter on Skiathos is simply for me the original lost world away from the harshness of modern life a place to completely relax with friends.

I read the winning food writers article in June Greece Magazine and it was written about eating in the winter at at Skiathos taverna, that alone would make me choose Skiathos. BTW whcih college? I shall be going to Chester Campus this September as they've transferred the course from Ellesmere Port, Anthi is our teacher.

must admit i am one of the few who live here that prefers the summer to the winter. i only rent as i think this is a much better idea, as you can still make so much more by renting out a uk house, and renting here... you also have no worries regarding taxes etc... its still cheaper to rent here than the uk, but must admit rent on the island is on the up... i admit i never shut up and could talk non stop, thats why i enjoy the summer so much , taking people round the island doing the guiding.. will admit it can take a lot of getting use to the winters at first. the island becomes deserted from secound week of october, and it can get cold in the winter, but its still a thousand times better than living in the uk....yes we do get snow but i love it, walk in it,roll in it, or throw it, u got to love it. on skiathos with its two very different seasons i would advise renting first, you may love it or hate it but you will never forget it..for me leaving behind family and friends was the hardest thing., not the weather thing. if you find somewhere with central heating and double glazing then you are made..all can say is give a try before you buy, then see geoff who has many great props for sale.. good luck..

As Andrew has indicated, yes I do favour out of season, its when you get to meet all the characters on the island (Including our Tezza) and i find i feel most at home. In summer there are far too many people to see the friendly skiathian faces that i have been lucky enough to meet up with over the years.
Fully support the views of my good friends Merlin, and Tezza, as they both know what they like, but for me its November and the woodsmoke (Sorry Mrs Whicker) and to walk along a deserted beach, or a warm evening by the fire or stove in Medussa or O'Batis ...
