Can any one tell the the correct name for those small sardine like fish that are usually grilled? You normally get a plate of about 10,I am sure the name sounds similar to gyros.
You used to be able to get them at the taverna on Tsougria but I was told a few years ago he was not allowed to sell them any more ,must admit never asked since. They are fairly common in the restaurants but it would be nice to know what to ask for.
I have just noticed on the Restaurants & Taverna forum under "Taverna Sklithri" I am sure there is a photo of them

Once, we went on a trip with the late Captain Costa on his boat ,New Start. We went to a taverna just on the tip of the mainland, you moor up the boat and the taverna is about 50 yards away,I am sure it is the one Skiathos Lad has talked about going to.
There were about 10 of us altogether and C.Costas ordered the meal and included was this fish that I suppose must have been about a foot long and cooked with silver foil around it.
When it was cut open the meat was reddish in colour and it melted in your mouth , it taste delicious, never did find out the name of the fish as I would of liked to tried it again

One of my favourite Greek lunches, a close second to fried squid - especially at Abelakia beach with a Mythos.
