Anyone know if there is any truth on a hotel being built near this beach? |

There is a large concrete shell being built just next to the slope leading down to the beach ... _________________

| Yeah i saw that too, but what with the building regs on the island it was difficult to tell what it may be. Hope its not going to be a large hotel as that is our favourite beach! |

Our first trip was in 1994 and the "grumpy old man" was not grumpy then, or the year after that. It was an idyllic spot with his mate collecting the money for the sunbeds....very reasonable then at £3 (cant remember how many drachma that was now).
HOWEVER returned in 2005 to find him a miserable old b****rd. I think it has something to do with having to pay for his pitch...and the development of the land directly adjacent to his little taverna....which is in a different place to where it was in 1994/95.
The beach however is still wonderful...even though when we first went back there in 2005 there were signs saying that it was a private beach. This I am sure would have put people off treking down the slope. |

Reading some of the posts this year by locals & others who are more familiar with the island than me, it seems to be the norm for most of the beach tavernas now. Apparently they have to bid for them every year.
Maybe Skiathos Lad or Kriandos can explain it. |

biding takes place every 2 years.
all iv got to say for marathabeach though is that its the place were palace hotel has the pipes from its sewage running.
suposed to have cleaning procceses and all but this is an expensive job and i dont think the water comming out is pure.
sorry to spoil it for some of you that love this beach but...........
anyway it brings to mind this summers story of my guest wich rented a big 600 kavasaki for a week(a steal at 100 euros-but it were the last week of the season) and told me of this beautifull beach he found by the airport xanemos beach, down from the quorry.
he took 10 consecutive showers and scrabed and scrabed when i told him its the place were all the sewage of the town leads to. |

The pipes were destroyed in 1970 (100%). There are no pipes to the beach (as far as nothing has changed since 2000). I don't know if there are pipes between Maratha and Koukounaries. |
