XL now have a notice up at check-in in Skiathos to say that all excess baggage must be paid for - I paid 30 euros but I knew I was over so I was expecting it.

At Manchester they combined my suitcase and hand luggage and as they didn't weigh over 25kgs together they didn't charge me, in Skiathos they didn't allow for the 5kgs hand luggage.

I think every tour operator is charging now . 1st choice did when we came back from Lefkas in May. Thomas Cook were last year and the year before in Skiathos , it didn't half cause a fuss at check in . Like you say they have found a new income stream .

So is it all bags treated individually?

We will be travelling as a family of four so will the combined weight be taken into account or will we get hammered for having one bag over 20kg and one under 20kg?

They should take the maximum allowance for each passenger for example 20kgs per person, but if you only take 2 cases you will only be allowed a total of 32kgs per case, this is for health and safety reasons. You should not have a problem, however airlines rules and regulations are always changing, give the airline or airport a quick call to clarify. This information can also be found on the airlines website normally. Sorry have to keep editing my spelling is atrocious can't even spell that)

We have booked through Thomas Cook this summer and they are giving a standard allowance of 15Kg but they kindly charge you automatically for an extra 5Kg. When we booked a late availability with First Choice at Whit they also said that late availability offers came with a 15Kg allowance but you could pay to increase it to 20Kg

Most of the operators who have their own airline now give you 15kgs and the option to pay for extra, I find it hard to believe people can manage with 15kgs it must be all the shoes I take!!!! Having said that I do see people at the airport with just a ruck sack, that must be the best way to travel no stress when packing, which is what I am trying to do now ready for friday. Did you know everyone I go on holiday friday YIPEEEEEEE..

hi kaz, they do say "lucky is the man who carries all his posessions over one shoulder" jesus traveled all over wearing just a robe and sandels he he,and dont say "yes but look what happened to him" he he i always took a THIN large towel (easier and quicker to dry) and for traveling any clothes that i was going to throw out anyway, just dispose of them at the studio.nobody knows you anyway.in fact i took any old tee shirt for walking and for beach, saving my good stuff for evening, the cleaners will be grateful for your old clothes.you can always tell who are inexperienced travellers, just spot the stillettos going through the airport !!

Very Happy Very Happy if you are a couple with 2 bags they were weighing them both at the same time and taking the total weight so if 4 are traveling they should take the total weight

Are you allowed to take a handbag as extra on top of your one piece of hand luggage with XL (always used to be able to) or does a handbag count as that one item ?

Also, I leave in 3-1/2 weeks from Gatwick......... has everyone been receiving their XL tickets in good time? Should I get them soon! No jokes please about never !!!! I've had that before with XL !!!!

No separate handbags - it would have to fit inside your other bag.

I invented a little trick last year and repeated it this year on our way to Austria.Push the babies buggy up to the desk/scales and when the lady is putting the cases on the scales slide your foot under the lip and gentley lift up the scales and hey presto........your 30 kilo case miraculously weighs 19..wow thats magic !!! Amid the baby/noise/buggy confusion your little naughty scam will go un-recognised.

Thanks Patsy, I will empty my case and start again. My problem is I always take the Just in case clothes. I have many beach towels, so what I do now is just leave them over there. I travel regularly with my job you would think I would have packing off to a fine art by now. I just love clothes and shoes!!!!

hi kaz, why all the towels ? one for sun lounge and one for yourself.studio should lay them on for you, try to think "mix and match" my promblem was always which case shall i take ,the red or the blue.(one being slightly bigger than the other, ended up with my trainers tied round my neck on leaving skiathos airport, i used to take seven pair of shoes and sandels for evening, but in a studio it realy doesn't matter and skiathos is not a dressing up island, unless you intend to p*ll,ha ha
