Hello just spent two weeks in Skiathos, I had originally posted here to find out about fires.
Where we where staying there was some fire damage ie the trees behind hotel and on the main beach were a bit like some kind of charred enchanted forest but it wasn't so bad I believe though from what owners said it was truly frightening, and they had never seen anything like it in their lives.
We have had a lovely holiday but there has been a huge change since we last went to Greece. Firstly it's so expensive I guess because of the euro? We choose Skiathos because different friends have been in the past mostly to Troulous this was the nearest I could get through Thomson.
We booked quite late due to my husbands job and have to go in August because have two children age 12 and 2 and the 12 year old cannot be taken out of school.
Agia P beach was far far too busy I don't know if it used to be different? Sunbed after sunbed all in row of two really unpleasant. We did find a nicer beach though as during a cloudy day walked yes walked into Skiathos town.
The nice beach was Kolios had a nice beach bar and sweet restaurant lots of Greeks always a good sign.
Marialena village was lovely accomadation but quite a walk from the main road though but I like walking so doesn't bother me. On the way down there was a donkey we used to buy him apples and carrots from the surly supermarket owner at the Iguana. Goats sheep etc so an interesting walk especially for the children.
Marialena very clean, great pool.
Nice places we ate in Jimmys on the main road very reasonable and people there very smiley little schnaps/ouzo after meal and bowl of water melon etc nice touches. Also restaurant at Kolios beach.
tip get taxi and take own luggage to and from airport (as quite a palaver with the luggage going on seperate truck)
I liked Skiathos and would return, but I think I was really after beaches a bit quieter (our problem being couldn't have coped with a ferry after the flight with the two year old, so couldn't do an island without an airport)I don't know if anyone has any suggestions for a different resort? Cate (In the distant past we have visited Crete, Kefalonia, Zakynthos. Corfu,Rhodes, mainland Greece) _________________

Hi Cate
We too have been to Crete, Kefalonia, Corfu, Poros, Ithaca, Lefkas and Thassos and nowhere matches the Skiathos beaches for sand and safe children friendly waters. I don't know what your budget is like but with a small child to get to the quieter beaches you really will need a hire car. We first took ours age 1 and 3 and stayed in Kolios and wished we knew then what we know now!
Our favourite other island was certainly Lefkas which was much quieter during the same two week period last year than Skiathos this year but again you may need a hire car to find that idyllic spot as we stayed in Nidri and never used the local beach once. The airport is a coach transfer away on the mainland but there is a bridge linking the two so there are no ferries to worry about. |

plz read my post august blues.
in islands with no airports things are just as busy and perhaps worst. you see skiathos is considered an expensive island so many of the lower class greek workers avoid it and try to find the cheaper skopelos and alonissos rooms, but to be honest if you compine the more expensive ferry tiquet together with the fact these 2 islands make their money by working these busy days it comes to the same thing.plus the noizy greek and italian kids!!!
i realize you have to come in august but perhaps next time youv got to make yr homework a bit more extensive.
i did write ups on this board about agia paraskevi : if you walk to the right end of the beach (as you face the water) and have yr own ombrella and airmatres you pass the rocks and come to 3-4 individual beaches and if they are taken then another 3 min walk you come to another large beach with a conreate jetty and for shure these will not be as busy.......
i do like colios very much and the taverna there is a great place but there is another write up about it from last year..........
anyway im glad y discovered it even if by chance and it wernt all spoilt.
hope we see you soon again. |

| After 15 years living on Skiathos, I'm now on Pelion, at Afissos. working in a small hotel. You may be able to get flights to Volos with excel, then rent a car..essential....Pelion rent about 235 euros one week and will deliver to the airport. This is a lovely seaside village with 7 tavernas, a couple of shingle beaches..not a kebab shop in site. and apart from from the last week in July and the first three weeks in August, it is heaven. loads of traditional villages to explore and lots of small, quiet beaches. |
