We went to a pre-christmas family get together the other night and it dawned upon us that it will be our last christmas in the UK for many years. Some of my relatives were asking questions and one of them was 'what will you do in the winter?'.
As we don't want any more children and I look daft with a beard we had a little think.
We came up with the following......I am going to learn to play the guitar,I fancy a nifty electric one.I have never played before but I like music and can play a bit on the piano.
I also would like to go shooting with the locals.Does anyone know the situation re gun ownership etc etc.
Claire is going to learn Greek and start to hike her way around the north side of the island. She has never really seen that side of things at all.
Anybody got any advice or other suggestions. _________________ www.perigiali-skiathos.com

Darrell it may be worth you looking at an acoustic guitar first , Yamaha do a very good range .Last count there was 11 or so guitars around the house ( electrics and acoustics also a couple bass guitars as both my sons play ) and the Yamaha acoustic is the one that is picked up most it has a great sound and you don't need an amp.
Then take up photography

Hi Darrell.
I've been having the same thoughts as you about this being our last Christmas in the UK - it is looking pretty likely that we will be in Skiathos by April 08...
I'm thinking that the best way to get through the winter in Skiathos is to turn into a complete hippy. I too don't suit a beard - so think I'll only go as far as floaty dresses and plaited hair. I'm planning on learning Greek (had a go at it once and didn't do too well !) help out at the dog sanctuary, walk my own dogs around the north of the island and generally CHILL OUT. My husband is planning on Fishing, doing odd jobs around our place and anybody elese's who may be willing to pay him peanuts and also generally CHILL OUT.
Bring it on.
By the way - I back Foxy on this one - what are you planning on shooting in Skiathos??

Whenever I've walked up the hills off the track a bit, I have always been amazed at the number of spent shotgun cartridges lying around. _________________ Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Acropolis was well covered with them a few weeks ago. In the hills if it moves it is a target ... _________________

I always thought the locals were right into their shooting.
Thought a little about fishing but I hate eating fish and I am not so good on a boat.
We might go over to Pelion for a ski if my mates can get flights to Athens at a decent price.
Hopefully I will try to start up a business doing some sort of re-furb work, building work or plumbing.I have been going through some photos to use on a small 2 page web-site.
Claire's step-dad is a whizz at computers, electronics etc etc.He does it or a living over here.He has just built a web-site advertising this kind of work along with sattelite systems and the like.It is called Koukounaries Komputer Konsultants although I think he may change it due to the accidental referral to the KKK.It will soon be on geofs web-site in the services section. _________________ www.perigiali-skiathos.com

| I remember a few years ago when I was wandering up at Kastro on my own (my other half stayed where he couldn't see over the cliffs). There was absolutely no-one around, or so I thought, then all of a sudden these three greek men came towards me (from the headland) carrying massive shotguns. I was scared to death! They were very nice & warned me not to go right to the end cos there were lots of biting midges. |

I know a couple of the guys who have guns, they really are into it as a sport. I said to them, there is nothing to shoot, yet they know what is around and when. The guns are well looked after and they certainly are very proud of their kit - and are often more than happy to let you take a closer look.
They say they like to go out with the dogs and the guns, its about nature and heritage etc. They do adopt a right to roam aproach, private property signs, and the few municipal signs up in the hills are seen as fair game for target practice. _________________
