I can't write anything a poetically as you Elle but I'm thinking about it and missing that beautiful place like mad, it doesn't help that the re re re re repeat of A Place In The Sun was just on Crying or Very sad

Ok here goes - be prepared for a long read;
We left an fairly grey Chester shortly after 9.30am - after a chicken royale we joined the ridiculously long T1 queue full of over excited stag and hen nights heading off for long weekends and eventually departed for Skiathos at shortly after 2pm. The Captain informed us that there was light rain awaiting us on arrival at Skiathos. Huh. We ate a spicy version of cottage pie then sticky toffee pudding on the plane washed down with little bottles of sparkling wine at £3.25 each. Filling enough but what happended to the bread roll, cheese and crackers and ferrero rocher choccy you used to get too? Anyway, we arrived around 8pm (a long long wait since last September but oh so great to be back) thankfully it was sunny - phew. I held up a poster I'd made saying "Hi Kath" and got to meet the really wonderful Mr & Mrs Whicker at the airport (seems to have turned into a regular hobby of mine, meeting lovely folks at airports) Anyway Darrell was at the airport busily herding his peeps onto transfer coaches and I must say he looked really well - his hair was lighter - not grey as he says, and of course he was sickeningly tanned. We walked from the top road down to Pap St to Karafelas studios which we found to be really ideally situated and our clean and comfortable room over looked a pretty little courtyard garden, yes we've happily booked again for next year. We didn't hang around and trotted on down to the Bourtzi for a nice drink or 2 before heading back up to Dionysis which was as good as ever, great set meal option but also plenty of choice of menu and good service. We went and people watched - well not that many as it was kind of late by then - at the very chilled Central bar.
The next day, Sat was an early start as we had pre-booked the hire car from Mustang rental who were kindly delivering it to us to our choice - our accomodation. We hired a brand new Suzuki Jimny and the lady delivering it to Daz suggested we might try the taverna one night - back to that later, carrying on we ate breakfast each day at Portobello and I even logged on to read the gossip on here once or twice as you get 15 mins free internet use with as much as you like to eat and drink and there is plenty of choice all for 7 euros each. Bill will ask you how you want your eggs, he is a fabulous person and does make me very special omelettes.
So we headed off down the Koukounaries highway, the flowers were in full bloom and the route is full of colour and I soon felt chilled with the scent of herbs and pines. Ah great to be back as always. Being a muppet I got sunburned because I forgot how hot it is even though there was a breeze, so deserveldy I suffered for that. Later we headed up to Platenos for late lunch and then decided to go for a late kick about on Tzaneria, but it started drizzling - we were pottering about putting the roof up when a couple came on to the beach waving at 4 people arriving in a speed boat, I said to Daz that it was Geof & Lida, he said (er sorry about this) that's not Geof unless he's had a tidy makeover - anyway they were there greeting Kurt & Goldie. So rain stopped play. We headed back to town by which time it had returned to being sunny so we down to the old harbour and watched the goings on. A great pastime. That evening we enjoyed Meltemi bar and En Plo. I actually think the menu could be better - we learned that it's always worth having a looked at the menu boards outside after all. The food and service was excellent though. Kurt & Goldie were there too - I'm sure they were stalking us. On the Sunday, it was a warm sunny day. We went for a drive through to Kechria beach and then headed over to Maratha where we at lunch and my Greek salad was served in a plastic carry out tray but was one of the best I've ever had. We called at the wonderful Kanapitsa taverna for late afternoon chilled drinks before returning to town, we visited the Albatross then headed to see whether there was plenty chicken with lemon in pot available at Alexandros, thankfully there was and all 3 of us had that, ahh mmm incredible, the chicken was just so moist , I had a plate of gigantes for my starter & I can safely say they were delicious and there wont be better tasting anywhere on the island! We met up with the lovely Magda & Yvonne and her daughter and one of Yvonne's art students too. Magda's husband palys live music and the atmosphere there is really special. We had one of our late nights or do I mean early mornings? and went on to the Kazbar and enjoyed a good evening there, Colin did a mean version of Angie for me.
I can let you all in to a secret, the measures at Kazbar are incredibly generous and the tasty little sherbet shot thingies are quite wonderful. Up bright and early on the Monday and not the least bit the worse for ware (I lie) it was overcast so we trundled over and drove down to Xanemos beach where we climbed the headland, great hangover cure and watched 3 Scandi planes head back home. It was still very warm even though cloudy so we decided to head for the afternoon to Vrom. It was dead there. Hardly a soul anywhere, I've never seen it like that. Still we enjoyed a great long lunch watching the rain coming in from over Skopelos. Thankfully it didn't amount to much and by the evening it had brightened up again. We called at the Albatross again, as you do and then decided on The Mediterraneo, that's had a real upgrade since we last ate there in 2005 and it was very pleasant indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed my souvlaki and tasted some of Daz's oven cooked lamb done with lemon & herbs and it was real melt in the mouth. We then went on to Syraino which became a favourite. Tuesday was a beautiful hot day. We had decided to go to Aghia Paraskevi. We then went for lunch to my favourite lunch spot in the whole world. In case you don't know where I mean - Anatolis. It was incredible. We will make the effort to book a taxi to take us up there for an evening next time, the people that have the place make wonderful dishes and are so pleasant. I am embarrassed to say I can't remember their names. Oh and a special mention has to go to the ravani cake - drizzled with honey and served with icecream - well well worth the calories. We spent the late afternoon sleeping at Sklitheri beach then trotted back to town as usual. It was Greece game that night so robed in my Greek flag we had cocktails at El Greco, eek 7 euros and upwards then climbed up to Sofia's Family Taverna. Again we hadn't eaten there for a while but were really glad we did. The views over the harbour and town and the bourtzi and over the old harbour and wondeful, but the food and service made it. We were happy to stay on for drinks on the downstairs terrace for the game. Never mind the result we found another place that will likely be a contender for our special anniversary next year. We awoke to a glorious day on the Wednesday and headed along to Kanapitsa and hired a motorboat from Kosta & Gabi, we remembered to take our mobile phone this time, thankfully. We've always wanted to visit Lalaria but that entirely is dependant on the wind direction. This time shortly after we set off from Kanapitsa Gabi phoned and said it was perfect conditions so for the 5th time of visiting Skiathos and hoping to go, we eventually went to Lalaria beach. It was well worth the wait, the water was like glass, calm and the most incredible clear turquoise water I've seen. It made the holiday, we arrived there and apart from us there was just one other family on the whole beach. An exursion boat later joined us but there weren;t that many people on it. One thing if you do get the cance to go - wear decent shoes or you'll end up like me trying to stay on your feet. We then sped over to Tsougria, there was an alien invader there so we didn't hang around and went to Troulos instead. I am not overly keen on the "come into my taverna" thing that goes on there. The prices are well cheap though compared to town and tasty enough scran too. At then end of the afternoon we chilled again at Kanpitsa and laughed as some folks sitting with their beers on the beach got thorougly soaked by the wake from the big ferry that passed by sometime earlier. We were bsuy trying to show our friend who came with us all the different sides of Skiathos town so that night headed along to the end of the world as we call it and sat and enjoyed aperitifs at Jimmys then headed over to Plakes for dinner. I have to say the meal I had was a delight, I ate the Plakes chicken breast served in an onion cream mushroom and pepper sauce. I appreciate that it was busy but I wasn't over impressed with the service though, it could definitely do better. Worth a mention though, the Golden Samena wine we like was only 14 euros a bottle.
Thursday was hotter and hotter again. We went to Achladies. We were too late for lunch at Rose Garden so drove up to sit and ponder the incredible view with a frappe at Panorama Pizza. Later on I took the chance to jump out on Elle and Paul and we chatted away about our beloved island. In the evening it was time to go and jump along to the Mouria where I bugged Kriandos and Viv and had a laugh with them and Gupta, Selwena, Bolneck and Mrs Boltneck and Deepsea called in too. We hadn't intended to overstay our welcome but the place was busy and a little behind schedule so we eventually left the good people in peace and headed down to eat at Limanakia. We sat right at the waters edge and enjoyed good food and very good service in a wonderful setting a great choice for our last night.
Our last day Fri was hotter than ever, we spent the day mooching around town, Kurt & Goldie were still stakling us. Later in the afternoon we headed over to sit and take in the view from the Boomerangers/Wedding bench, little tears made their way down my cheeks as I realised our wonderful week we'd spent at our favourite place was very quickly coming to an end. After Kataifis and frappes at Syraino we made our way to the airport and it was my turn to be jumped out on by Claire who really looked well and TJ and Fast Eddie.
We queued for an hour and three quarters to be brought back to wet and freezing cold Manchester and our grey worlds.
We love so much about Skiathos, nowhere makes us look forward to going as there. It's people and incredibly warm and friendly and it is beautiful. Believe me, if you've been you know and if you don't you don't know what you're missing. It'll be a long cool summer and even longer dark cold winter wishing the days away until it's time to go again and feel alive with all our senses being tantalised in the nicest possible way.
All I can say we had a wonderful week in paradise, it may be small but is really really is beautiful and roll on Friday 29th August 2009!!!

Ah Sue, it actually brought tears to my eyes reading your write up. I could see most places that you were talking about, taste the food( and the drink|) and it made me ' homesick' for the beloved Skiathos. Sad

Oh well, only another 10 weeks .........and counting really fast so the time goes more quickly!!!
