Hi All

New to this board and will be my first time in Skiathos next July. Just booked for a week in June at the Ioannis Studios in Aghios Paraskevi with my other half. We have spent the last couple of years in Zakynthos and felt it was time to move on as it was getting a little too 'young' for us 40 somethings. We like peace and quiet, meeting people, greek food, good wine and generally everything Greek (apart from the dog & cat issues) Sad
So. What to do and where to go (if we can be bothered to move from our sun loungers) Smile Any advice is more than welcome Very Happy
We will probably hire a car for the day as I believe the island is quite small and easy to navigate and I actually quite enjoy driving on Greek Islands..makes a refreshing change..
I also hear that you can walk the dogs from the Rescue Centre?? Is it close to us?

Look forward to hearing your replies

Fran

Welcome Very Happy

You're not far from the Dog Shelter where you are. Everything in Skiathos is known by "Bus Stops". You're at Number 16 & the road to the dog's home is at bus stop 18. It's a bit of a hike uphill from there so I'd recommend visiting it on the day you've got the car.

The bus route is a single main road along the south coast of the island & there are 26 stops. All the other roads are dirt tracks really.

Sounds pretty simple really, are the buses regular?

Absolutely. Every 15 minutes or so. They can get a bit packed but it's usually good fun.

Hi there Fran. Whereabouts are you from?

We got back yesterday and ate at the Green Park restaurant one night(which is where the Ioannis Apts are). It's in a lovely little area set back from the main road, it's very peaceful (wish I could say the same for where we stayed)! It's been mentioned on this board before but the portions at the restaurant are huge, we got a starter as well as a main course and wish we hadn't.

I totally agree with you, in fact I was only saying to my other half while we were there I love everything about Greece but hate the attitude most of them seem to have about cats & dogs. It causes me no end of upset when we are there.

Hi Hayley

Very close to you we are in Huddersfield. Been going to Zante for last few years but have grown out of it now and saw Skiathos on a TV programme a while ago and decided that was our next island Smile
I believe there is not much to do which is fabulous for us as we just like to chill out, sunbathe all day, evening meal and a couple of drinks later on. Can you suggest where to eat and also which are the nicest beaches and is Skiathos town worth a visit??
thanks
Fran

Check out the restaurants & tavernas forum......there's loads of 'em.

The town is the main place on the island, everywhere else is pretty quiet. Quite cosmopolitan but a great chill-out place at the same time.

Hi Northernbird. We live in Aghia Paraskevi & Green Park (Ioannis Studios) is our favourite place to eat in the area - you will love it. As for hiring a car, make sure you get a 4x4. The insurances from the hire companies do not include damage to the underside of the vehicle & a 4x4 will give you the best opportunity to see all of the island without ripping the floor out! Its cheaper to hire it once you arrive too. Have a great holiday.

Be warned Fran, once you've been you may never vist anywhere else again !
Make you sure you visit the bar on the Bourtzi in the harbour overlooking the sea it's bliss and views to die for and do it at the start of your holiday cos you'll want to do it again !

Gary's right Fran. We once got the bus up early evening and sat there with a glass (or several) of white wine waching the sun go down. It was so tranquil. I think that's one of my very first memories of Skiathos and it's stayed with me.

The Bourtzi is a rocky promontory (ooooh - big words) on the tip of the island. It separates the new and old harbours in the town. They hold open-air theatres on there & there's also a taverna. Pleasant place to sit & chill.
