Yassou apo Skiathos ...
Its Saturday night and the town is coming to life. Have spent the last two hours in the shade of the pines at the Bourtzi cafe reading about Michael Palin and his travels, in eastern europe and watching the sun set over Plakes. To say its hot here is an understatement its been 35 degrees in the shade, and humidity around 60%. Last weekends storms have given way to hot clear weather. The sea is warm and Tsougria is paradise ...
Met friends both old and new, and its really great to be back. Messages have been passed on, and Darrell tapped me on the shoulder at the airport too. Elle - its true - both flags and Yorgos sends you and Paul his love.
The bourtzi is an oasis (Sorry Mike) and was only disturbed by the sound of Russian horsepower as the 18.45 Dolphin went by to Konstantinos and the starlings coming later to roost in the trees.
The sun was setting, and i looked down and watched a gentleman of uncertain years diving off the board - who needs the olympics, he was brilliant. A duet of fishing boats heading out into the evening sun, and the Kassandra heading home ...
Tonight Vassis Koralis is singing at Taverna Hellenkion at 20.30, so must not be late.
Kallee Spera apo Skiathos, and Kalo Taxhedi to all arriving here next week

Oh Ian, such good news!!!! ... and what a lovely description.
Made me all weepy, it did, the vision of the sun setting over Plakes - and the earth flag proudly being flown on our Thimios... I just can't believe sometimes how deep in my heart that place is, those people are.... it's not at all like life here is bad for us!
Would just rather be there... roll on November.
Thank you for passing on our messages and for giving us all such a great feel for that very moment there on Bourtzi.
xo

Hope no one minds me posting this. Ian's post just reminded me of what a special place the Bourtzi is.
I've said before that next September I retire and I decided a few years ago that on the date of my retirement I wanted to be with my loved ones ( Mrs DP, son daughter and partners)somewhere warm, sat at a table with a few glasses of wine able to toast the future and to thank them for putting up with me while I did a job I hated.
I knew the minute we sat down on The Bourtzi that this was the place. For me, it is magical.
Mrs DP said the kids would notl ike Skiathos.it would be too quiet for them ( They are into Ibiza).......I said I didn't want them to wait until they were 50 like we did before we found it.
I will be there next September on what will be for me a very special night. Nothing could give me greater pleasure than when, as I'm sure I will, I hear my kids tell me that it is a special place too !

Discopants I'm glad you enjoyed your first visit to Skiathos. We discovered it in 1999 and when we came back my husband said he thought it was the best holiday he had ever had. We've been to lots of other places, mainly Greek islands, some Spanish islands, 3 cruises. Please don't think I'm bragging as I am not. But, and this is a special but, my husband says there is nowhere like Skiathos. That is why we will be back in 9 days time for our top up. We haven't been every year but never missed more than one year before we are off again. A couple of years ago, as we had just taken off, I turned to my husband and told him that I felt sad to leave Skiathos that time and he had to agree with me. It is very special to us and Villa Maria in Troulos, where we have stayed 3 times and going there again very soon, is also a special place to us.
What a wonderful place to spend your retirement and I wish you all the best when it comes. I retired just over one year ago and love the freedom I now have. We have 3 much grown up kids now and about 5 years ago one of our sons and his wife had a holiday in Skiathos as they had heard so much about the place from us. They said they loved Skiathos and it is the one place that they will return to one day, as they never go back to the same place for a holiday. Skiathos does that to folks and so many of us have experienced the same feeling. May we all have many more years to visit this beautiful island and meet its beautiful people. |
