Had a quick word this morning with travel agent who I know. He was telling me that he has now completed all the paperwork for those that travelled with companies that used XL ie Greek Island Club to name one.
The process has started to get hopefully their money back.
He went on to say it is very complicated depending how you booked and booking online can be a disaster as far as getting money back.
He did also say although if you paid with credit card their insurance will pay your money back ,but.
The rules are going to change next year where credit card insurance will not pay back money for presumably flights that have been lost through company going bust.
No idea if this is true and it may just apply to online booking like most of us independent travellers do,worth checking into , not that you can do much about it.
Another thing worth doing is checking the insurance we take out next year.I got mine independently from First Choice and I do not think as most do not, cover collapse of an airline.
For the extra few pounds it may be worth paying for that as well ,that is if they do include collapse in their insurance.
Viking seems to of got in quick for the air routes and worth looking at.Trouble is with a large company like XL and big banks going down tube we will be on tender hooks until the plane touches down in Skiathos.
We will certainly be looking at back up plans to get to Skiathos and home just in case the worst happens again.
We opened a bank account in Skiathos several years ago in preparation for when we won the lottery and we had a bank account ready to transfer money into for that big villa overlooking the sea ,at least it does not cost anything to dream .As it turns out at the end of each holiday we go and pay as much as we can into account, sometimes only 50 Euros but it has now built up enough so we can pay to get home if the worst comes to the worst as usually we are skint.
Worth thinking about although do read somewhere on Skiathos Info about what documents you need to take.
Plus it has the bonus of when talking to people you say "I have a Greek bank account" , goes down very well , just do not tell them how little you have in it |
