Tuesday, October 28th is OXI day in Greece. Here on Skiathos down at the old harbor there will be parades and marching bands and all sorts of other activities commemerating OXI DAY.
The Significance of OXI Day in Greece.
OXI DAY on October 28th commemorates the anniversary when former military general and Prime Minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas said, OXI or NO to an ultimatum made by Italian Prime Minister Mussolini to allow Ialian forces to occupy strategic locations in Greece or otherwise face war back in 1940. Greece's answer was NO.....or.....OXI.
The activities will probably begin down at the old harbor around 10:30 A.M. Those wanting a seat at the many harbor cafes should make it down there by at least 10. The activities may not start until 11 A.M. I say 10:30 because, well, you know..................

So we woke up to a stunning day with blue sky and strong sun.We got ready in a hurry and hot-footed it down to the Old Port Cafe on the old harbour.Elizabeth and Yannis had reserved a table for us right at the edge of the harbour (ringside seats).
After a couple of pots of tea (too early for the hard stuff) we saw the band getting ready around by the ferry port so we sat down to watch the proceedings. The muscians then proceeded down the old port, did a turn-around by the swings and then came up the port again, until they reached a little podium opposite George Papapapapap the jewellers.
At this place, all the local bigwigs stood including Nicholas the mayor and some uniformed people (port police, coast guard etc etc). Also the priest dudes were there,I am not a church-goer at all but I love seeing these guys around town. They always have their proper clothing on topped off with a pair of shades.....cool or what ??
Imagine the head of the Church of England walking around with his Ray-Bans on at Glasters......now you now where I am am coming from!
Anyway I digress,so after the parade there was Greek dancing on a stage set up opposite the Slip-Inn with all the local kids wearing their traditional costume
We hung around for a while saying hello to all the people we saw in the summer and generally making conversation with new friends and old.Sophia had a fab old time running around with her kindergarten gang and making mischief.
We then decided that it was time for dinner so we all went off to Mouragio (spelling) up on the new harbour beside Fresh Bar.We we joined by Mike,Helena,Ivan,Annie,Gabby,Theo and various children. If you don't know,Mike is the Guv of the Oasis Studios and Helena is his fine wife. The other guys are his crew and what a super crew they are.We had a wonderful lunch (huge) with a few beers. We saw Geff and Lida there and also many faces that we recognised from just being around town. These include taxi drivers, bus drivers, the butcher from Asterias and my bank manager! (everyone here is on first name terms with the bank manager,no India call centre here).
One of the discussions during our lunch was fishing,so I listened and learned. Some of Mikes gang were going down to the little jetty in the boat-yard for a spot of sport later in the day,I was invited as a learner so I took the bait........
I arrived and the sun was looking down on us,what a stunning place. It was peacefull, hot and very tranquill.4pm to 6pm try it.
Ivan tought me a couple of moves and guess what happened next..I caught a fish,my first one ever.We all had a beer to celebrate and then the sun went down.
Got home and had a lovely last beer down the old port cafe.
till next time. _________________ www.perigiali-skiathos.com

| This post above any other has just made me despair that I am still living in England. It is a good job that Chester are 3-0 up or I would be very very depressed. |

| I was trying to watch on the webcam today and I think Suejet had the same idea but I think I was too late to see the procession. |

Well Darrel your description of Oxi day is good and it really does make us feel a longing to be there. I don't know of any place in the world that gives us that feeling, and yes Skidsy we were at the match too and the surprising thing was not only did it stay at 3-0 but it could have been many more. Wonderful writeup Darrell I've just lived the whole the day with you.
Are you sure you wouldn't rather be in cold, snowy England working outdoors having jaffa cakes with your tea, no? What about doughnuts, no? Bet you would for a shortcake.........pardon?
Ok seeing that I enjoyed reading about your day so much I might bring you some jaffa's next time.
Who got to eat the fish? |

Now Mrs W, that was not nice, I would kill for proper shortbread!!!!
However, I would not kill for the snow that is in London now, as during the day we are still wearing T shirts......

The shortbread out here is not the same as the propper stuff in England, maybe I can beg you to bring some out in May!
