| We have been to skiathos with my boyfriend from 20 untill 29 juli.We had very nice food everywhere in the island , but our last night we had a bad experience. We decided to eat in a nice taverna restaurant called limanaki in the city of skiathos , in the new port near the bus stop for koukounaries , near skuna restaurant. It was full of people and we could not immagine what was going to happen.First of al we waited 20 minutes to take the plates of the previous people. We arrive d at 22.30 , we ordered at 23.10, drinks arrived 23.20 and then we waited for a salad limanaki and 2 pastas until 24.10.When we complained and we were not the only one , they told us that the food is coming and the kitschen was very busy.We started laughing with other people that ordered steaks , and the waiter told them that steaks were finished for that evening.A family with 3 children were waiting for grilled fish unti 24.20 (they arrived with us at 22.30).We heard a greek couple near to complain because they had to pay 39 insted of 30 euros because the waiter made a mistake and wrote a bottle of retsina and not a glass. We left checking the bill and there was an error of an extra bottle of beer that we did not drink, they asked sorry and we left very angry. The food was ok but the service real bad.I do not recommend this taverna ... |

Zorbas in Troulos. It was a case of they all look the same, the menus were all identical so lets just pick one... I went for a mixed grill, big mistake, it was like something from a really really bad truck stop. It was a plate of badly cooked pale, bland and unappetising meat, you coul'd tell what was what.
The worst thing thing was the smell, it just smelt bad, aweful in fact. There was no sauce, seriously over cooked vegetables and under cooked chips. I just couldn't figure out where this smell was coming from. I them picked up a piece of the chicken took a sniff and, oh my god, I was nearly sick, it smelt rotten, foul. I called the waiter over, an English waiter, a nice guy, and told him to smell it, which he did, after recoiling from the meat he immediately took my plate away.
We then decided to get out quickly as my girlfriends plate of food was better but only due to the fact that it didn't smell of rotten, putrid meat. The waiter then tried to charge me for the meal which I had refused, he said that he didn't know what chickens smelt like so he didn't know if the smell of my food was wrong but he did agree it was a bad smell????
After some questioning the boss agreed that I should not pay and we left. Looking at some of the other tables of food I didn'y see anything which would redem the place in any way. |

| Hi Markyboy, is Zorbas opposite the crazy golf in Troulos, through a sort of stone archway. If it is we had a terrible meal there years ago. This year there was a guy outside along the wall, trying to get folks in, we declined of course. |

That's the one, Mo.
It's the last one on the left before you get to the fork. Never been in there but there used to be an Asian guy who would try to get you in there. |

Yes, that's the one. It seems such a shame coz they have a nice location and the restaurant was nicely laid out. I could cook better than their chef with my eyes closed. |

| We ate there once, in 2000. The meal itself wasn't too bad, but there wasn't enough on the plate to feed a sparrow! If I remember rightly, it was then owned by a couple from Yorkshire. Needless to say, we ain't been since. |

Zorba's changed hands yet again last year.
The ability to use it as a cut throught to get between the Asselinos road and the main Skiathos road has now been made more difficult, although not impossible if you brazen it out!
The menu earlier this year featured pasta rather heavily, if I remember rightly. I looked at it a couple of times, but didn't bother, so have no idea if it's any good.
It was busier this year than in previous years, but that's not saying much!
They still had someone trying to embarrass you enough to make you go in, as did Ageliko opposite it. Why is it so difficult to say no? Is it an English cultural thing.? I always say no, 'coz I'm always on my way to Varelli up the road, but I also always feel bad about it!!!
Perhaps some others on this board have been to Zorba's this year and can report favourably?
I have no view, as I haven't eaten there since the new people took over.

Only ever had 1 meal at Zorbas many years ago which was not very good, although we passed it many times during our holiday in June we never felt the urge to return, maybe we will give it a go in September and report back to all. We were talking to Tim in June, he is an English guy who last year worked the Victoria bar, and now serves on and also stands outside touting for businness at Zorbas (all part of the job), from what he said Zorbas had picked up and he was earning good tips!!!!! I must admit it did seem busier than usual this year. _________________ Karen&Phil

| Didn't actually eat at Zorba's but a couple staying at our apartments did and said it was the worst meal they had ever had. Also, as we passed the back of the restaurant last week we saw what must have been the chef. I don't want to be rude but he was smoking in the kitchen and didn't look particularly "hygenic" himself. |

| Hayley, we noticed the chef who looked like a clean change of 'pinny' wouldn't have hurt him. Mind you if you look too closely you will see a lot of folks smoking in kitchens in Skiathos. |

| That's right, we noticed this happening at the Village in Koukanaries but I think their laws on smoking are SO different to UK, especially now more than ever. |

The Health and Safety laws are the same throughout Europe but like everything else we take the law to the Nth degree and employ thousands of consultants and public service employees to police them. the Greeks just ignore them and get on with it. Smoking has been banned in public places in Greece since 2003 but you would never know...it is Greek culture to rebel against such rules and accepted at the highest level.
"Regardless, some people abuse it," says Pantelis Vekios of the Health Ministry. "It happens a lot in Greece. If your boss smokes and you can't say anything to him because he'll fire you, what can you do?"
I love that country. |
