Fisherman and friend... day after day, we watched this man fishing from our balcony - and day after day, his very happy, very well loved labrador would swim out from shore, to be hauled onto the boat by her beloved man. We made a great connection wtih him, after walking by his garden one day and pointing to his sprawled out dog, saying "skili sou? poli orea!" (I'm sure we muffed the language to bits) and pulling out pics of our own very happy, very well loved black lab, Djuna...

a fully laden Thimios, returning from Platanias on Pelion. (I think it was Platanias..). The ferry had broken down and Thimios was hired to go over and pick up a truckload of produce that needed to make it to the island. Giorgos pulled us aboard and took us with him - through BIG seas and lightening storms... it cleared up for the trip back. We could barely make it to the wheelhouse for all of the fruits and veggies (where 5 of us had to stand for no room anywhere else!) We ate our way back, as Yiannis taught us Greek names of the various goodies as he popped them in our mouths... verikoko, portokali, milo, stafilia... I think the load was quite a bit lighter upon our return to harbor...

Your photos are fabulous, just what's needed when it's raining again here.

One of my ambitions is to walk along the shoreline with Roger.
Sadly by the time I'll be able to do it, he won't be with us |

I know the feeling with my old hound. We'll all have to make do with dodging the pensioners on Parkgate front. |

No he doesn't. How can I dodge you? They won't let the dog into the boozers
By the way Elle, what is the name of the little dog? |

Hi Sue! I'm well, thank you... quite cold here. 12 degrees F (don't know what that is in C, only that it is damn cold!!!) here in the AM so I am breaking great chunks of ice out of the horses' water in the mornings and feeding great, wet, hot and sloppy mashes at night... How are you?
Foxy - what is wrong wtih your Roger? Is he an elderly gentleman? We have an old geezer... Shorty the 'terror', who is about 105 in dog years, blind, deaf and getting very batty. He still can make his rounds, by braille I think, on our property (fenced 5 acres) but we fear he's not long for this world. I can't bear the losing of our dear furry family, though it is inevitable and we've been through it a lot. Thank goodness Djuna is still a young'un. They give us SO much, I always feel that outweighs the pain of losing them. I hope your Roger is OK.
Skidsy, the little dog is Monica... she lives with one of the boat men in the old harbor and is doted after by ALL of the guys. She's quite a tough little thing, and we became great friends the month Paul and I were there last year. I am writing a book which chronicles the life of one little dog who adopted us back in 1990 (anyone remember Margarita?) and subsequently opened us up to many an adventure, both sad and wonderful... back then, rarely did you see a dog at the harbor that was not a sad, thin begging stray... they would chase them off the harbor front... except for the fisherman - the one who looks like James Taylors brother! - with the generations of well loved, bicycle-riding dogs - but now - a whole new dimension of these guys has blossomed and Monica (and others) is/are proof of that... it's very sweet to see how gentle and loving they all are with the boat dogs and how well looked after and FAT they are !!!
back to chiping ice... thinking of Skiathos... only 4 months!!!

Not yet, Elle. He's only seven.
I meant that by the time I could afford to live on Skiathos, I'll be about 60. My old mate will be long gone by then. |
