I think it was something to do with the war because this boat and submarine were also there, and they laid a wreath at the old port.

Nice picture Paul, a one off view in Skiathos, just wondering what you were doing in my driveway taking it, or were you visiting my neighbours? |

Hi Paul, apology accepted . Yes, having building work done, including the 12 foot gates to stop people who ignore the private road sign!!!!! . Of course pop in for cuppa if you can negotiate the electrified gates and then the dobermanns, lol |

ah... sadly....
the big gates and tall fences and the 'keep out' notices continue to flourish on our sweet isle...
Skaithos Lad, do locals do such things on their properties?
I actually thought it was only an American idiosynchrasy ... as I fondly remember a childhood filled with being able to innocently wander everywhere, without boundaries, treading gently and harming none... Now we have thugs and robbers and even in places where there is no such thing (like where I live) everyone has carved out and claimed what is theirs, and theirs alone, not for anyone else's enjoyment.
Sorry Wendy, nothing personal... it's just that after 21 years of delightful Skiathos discovery, I still like to wander about and thrill in natural (and cannot really be claimed by man, though now it seems that money can buy a sort of claim to the viewing of it) discovery like a new sunset view, treading gently and harming none, and am saddened by all of the fencing out that is occurring.

| Unfortunately Elle not everyone is as considerate or respectful to others as you and the majority of visitors to Greece or anywhere in the world for that matter. Only one thing really annoyed me this year on Skiathos (well apart from the changes on Banana Beach) and that was on the wooden signage in the Koukounaries car park someone had carved their name and the word Manchester into the boards which have stood there all this time until some chav from England comes along and decides that they must leave their signature in such a destructive way. Total morons and unfortunately the whole of England is now full of them. |

| Thankyou Skidsy...Elle I appreciate your sentiments but I along with everyone else have the right to be in their own home without intrusion from anyone unless it is invited. Yes, I am a local and feel no differently on this subject than my Greek friends and neighbours do. I could imagine how you would feel if you found someone in your garden and didn't know whether they were there for malicious reasons or not. There are so many beautiful places on this island, where people would not feel in the slightest bit peturbed by your presence, that there is no need to be disrespectful towards the islanders and invade their privacy. |

Wendy, no one is talking about invading yours or anyone else's privacy...
personally, I was bemoaning the loss of lands to wander on, on this island that I consider to be my home away from home and have for 21 years.... whether I 'own' property there, or not!
From relatively few villas to the many, we've seen the island morph, as everything will... all meaning more reason for crime, more to protect. Wild lands, orchards, forest (aren't they protected? or is that just words on paper and not in deed?) being scraped off and built up.. I mourn the same loss here in Northern CA as well. I see what we call 'McMansions' going up everywhere that used to house an orchard or farmland, homes far bigger than anything anyone would ever possibly need, streams getting compromised and the hiking and riding trails and beautiful wild-ness getting built over by someone who usually spends very little time there anyway.
No, I've not had the privilege of buying property there to call my own and I respect your right to privacy... but I have the right to mourn my loss, feel the way I do, as well! _________________ "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
