Good Luck Sue and Steve in your Greek adventure. It takes guts to do it and I hope it turns out to be the best thing you've ever done.
To Foxy and Bee I have to say that I did point out that Cyprus is not the ideal place to settle and I've been to lots of places that are prettier but with the daughter living there we spent lengthy breaks there and remember it's huge compared to Skiathos. Yes you can find Karaoke but that's not going to be us.
There are still many many traditional greek villages and lots of them are near to the commercial centres, we want the choice to flit between the two and like has been said it's a good job we don't all want to emigrate to the same place but for us, having access to a thriving ex pat scene, especially in Winter is important.
I posted to hopefully offer advice and encouragement to anyone thinking of going Greek and don't want to get into the Cyprus v Skiathos debate so I'll call it a day on this subject............... Can't wait to visit Skiathos mind..... who knows our plans may go pear shaped after we've been. _________________ Greece is the word ! |

Discopants, we all (well... we would all hope to!) have our special spot in the world, that place that makes us feel instantly at home, brings tears to our eyes when just thinking about it... is wholly in our comfort zone and we would want to return to time after time...
For us, since the mid '80s it's been Skiathos... other friends of ours think we're crazy to continue to return to the same place year after year (we DO explore some other country or Greek island - almost every time we travel - and if in Greece, always ending up in Skiathos!) and other's favorite places are in Mexico, or Thailand - or another Greek island.
So, if yours is Cyprus, the best of luck to you! You are very, very lucky to have found somewhere you look forward to living out your life - and have the means to do it! _________________ "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.

Discopants - sorry - didn't mean to offend (there's been a lot of that lately on this forum it seems - are we all a little negative with the prospect of spending a winter in Britain...?? I know I am!). As as I said - we all have our favourites and Elle summed it up well. I'm sure you will be very happy in Cyprus - I have a few friends already living over there, Paphos and Larnaca - and they love it.
I'm looking forwad to seeing the heated debate now between debstgr and bladerunner on the ever delicious debate of smoking!

How did you guess ?
( Lighting one up right now )
Smoking is one of life's great joys, i even used to smoke just before i stepped out onto the pitch in the Balham & District league.
I got two phonecalls, one last week and one last night about two pals of mine both non smokers, the first Tony went into hospital for a routine Bowel infection, he is now dead at 46 yrs old due to MRSA, the second Bill 47yrs had his leg amputated yesterday just above the knee due to infection from an injury, i also went to another pals funeral last year again a non smoker, he was 44yrs old and died of cancer.
These self-righteous politicians and leftie luvvies who spend their time and OUR money trying to tell us how to live our lives would be far better employed in tackling the real problems in this country. |

Dear Bladerunner
I can only assume and hope your posts are tongue in cheek, no informed and rational person would actually believe that would they?
Being an ex and having watched several friends and family die in agony as a direct result of smoking I can only hope you or none of yours witness this death through ignorance of the evidence or blinkered vision that it could not happen to them......Smoking causes cancer.....it has no respetct of who or what you are, it kills you. |

Out of respect for any board members (or their families) who may currently be cancer sufferers I think this topic has become wholly inappropriate. This is the last thing anyone in these circumstances would want to see when logging onto a holiday forum.
I sympathise with debstar but as we don't know the personal circumstances of anyone who may read this I think we need to be guarded in what we post. |

Well said Kath - how very level-headed you are. I agree, this subject has been flogged to death.

One hand !
Jackman your quote made me smile a little anyway.
Thursday I damaged my right hand at work and spent the last few days in Hospital getting the jigsaw that was my hand placed back together.
So I can only clap with one hand, in fact I has taken me ages to type this with only my left had.
No visuit to Skiathos for me, for the nex few months anyway, ouch |
