| OFFSIDE or NOT Offside that is the Question. |
|
|
I think most have seen Blackburn Rovers equalising goal against Manchester City on TV, the player was in an offside position, he attempted to head the ball that sailed over his head to a teammate who scored, all the experts and retired referees interviewed mentioned that the first player would have been offside if his head had touched the ball but not offside because he missed, with the player being directly between the player crossing the ball and the goalkeeper I cannot with any stretch of the imagination see how he was not interfering with play.
FIFA and the football authorities must sort it out, players and sometimes managers are getting booked for protesting about a law change few in the game understand.
What do others think about the current offside chaos? |

Was it Brian Clough who claimed that any player not attempting to gain an advantage should not be on the pitch? |

David, I think you are correct, I know Mr Clough said that if football was meant to be played in the air, god wouldn't have put grass on the ground.
I always smile when thoughts turn to Cloughie clipping a youth around the ear for running onto HIS pitch. |

obviously sam allardyce didnt read the quote about grass and football played in the air.
i think his quote was 'if he is not interfearing with play then what is he doing on the pitch
the whole rule is stupid, if a defence pushes up and plays someone offside that played just stands still and says im not interfearing,
the blackburn goal is worse, the player tried to head the ball, yet by the rules he is not interfearing,
the whole rule needs changing.
as does foul throw ins and taking them with 5yards of where they were took,
also a wall being 10yds back when the ball is kicked ! _________________ There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that dont.

MOTD,
I agree with all points, I think the officials should be eye tested if they can't see one hand behind the ball at throw ins for extra distance and the foot moving over the line before the ball is released. |

Spurs v Reading, great game but 2 of Spurs goals should have been disallowed. I think it was Malbranque's? goal had a Spur's player clearly offside, the other was Defoe encroaching on the penalty for the rebound.
My point is how can the officials regulate the interferance/non interferance decisions if they can't call the easy infringements correctly.
Human error......its a great leveller? _________________ We Stand Together |

What amazes me is how often the technology, reviewed at leisure and in slo-mo, proves the officials to be correct. Not just in football but other sports (especially cricket) also.
This may be due to the proximity of the officials to the action and the fact that they are looking for particular aspects of the game. I have stood as a cricket umpire for a few years and can say that judging an LBW appeal is
much
easier out in the middle than looking at it on TV even with telephoto lenses and 'hawk-eye'! |

David,
India must be upset with all those Aussies not being given out, in Symons case being close to the action didn't result in the correct decision when he was caught, then the 3rd umpire got the stumping wrong, that was worth more than 100 runs off his bat, I didn't see all the cricket but it was reported Ponting was not given out in another incident when he obviously was, I think guilt spurred Ponting to admit a catch was grounded by him.
Andrew Strauss had his international career put on hold because he was given out many times when he wasn't and as a result his form suffered.
I agree with you about being close to the action and the ease to re-run lbw appeals, I always found I could picture where the ball landed, the flight etc before deciding the batsman's fate.
I just regret that in the quicker modern game at top level too many games are affected by human error which the latest technology could in many cases put right. |

I don't doubt the use of technology in all the areas you mention. It's there and should be used. However, in all the cases you
did
mention it is a case of determining something that
did
or
did not
happen. I only mentioned the LBW situation. Hawkeye may be an interesting side-issue but even then it is only projecting an imaginary line.
Mistakes
will
be made by umpires but when asked by players about an incident upon which I judged, I will admit that
"I may make a mistake but I never make a bad decision!"
Pompous, yes but it usually shuts them up! |

David,
I smiled at your reply, it triggered off a memory, many years ago in my misspent youth, I was playing in a big game at Cheltenham, many additional marquees, hospitality etc, before the game there was lakes of free booze, we all had a tank full, we fielded first, suddenly I was bursting and spotted some bushes not far from the boundary, I inched my way back and was only inches from the line as the last ball of the over was bowled, the captain called out, Ivor your bowling now, I couldn't dive off for relief so with legs crossed I ran in, the ball went down the leg side about 3 feet outside the leg stump, hit the batsman on the pad, in agony, not seeing straight I screamed howszat and the umpire raised his finger, I thought the batsman was going to hit me, later when I was batting I stepped out of the crease and really smashed the ball hard and rising, the guy who I unfairly got out took the highest catch I have ever seen, he just kept getting higher and higher, out I walked up to him and we shook hands, later we had many more drinks together in the bar.
Happy Days (I had many of those as a 15 year old playing for Truro and Truro Railway Club). |
