Head Of Youth Development  Reply with quote

There are press reports that Lee Barrow has been appointed as the Head Of Youth Development.

Regular attenders at 1st Team Games will know Lee as the 'mysterious man' who accompanies Kevin Heaney and Chris Webb at the games. Lee was also assistant at Barnstaple Town and works with Joe Broad and Tolley at a Youth Development centre (PAFC) in Braunton, North Devon.

Does anyone know whether this post is in addition to that which Steve Matthews has or does it rplace him???

Steve Matthews has been given 1 months notice to leave the club .

He informed me this afternoon by phone .

I don't know what the hell is going on at this club , but as the manager of the youths senior squads , it stinks .

Like any new project , you have to lay the foundations corectly to build for the future . Steve Matthews has laid these foundations to a superb level for youth football . Having worked alongside Steve at Truro City and Plymouth Argyle Youth Development , I am saddened but not shocked at this decision . Saddened as he is a great bloke , but not shocked as nothing at the club is surprising me .

I was asked to manage the under 16s by Steve . He sold me the club , after being at Wendron for 8 years . I put together a great bunch of players in the Truro City Jaguar u16 team together with combining the Cougar team to form our Luke Cup team that has progressed to the Final of the AH Luke Cup this season . The under 18s also reachy the semi-final of the Rathbone Trophy . All this would not have been done without the imense support of Steve Matthews .

Steve's love and comitment for this club is top class . He knows every young players name and is always asking and encouraging them .

On a personal note , I feel honoured to have worked with you Steve and thank you on behalf of Truro City Youth and under16s for what you have delivered to this club and to my team .

All the best for your future .

Phil Hodges.

Phil, that's a great post and all of us who know Steve will surely echo your sentiments.

I'm sure we won't hear the club's 'official' reason for this decision but we can draw our own conclusions.

I wonder how the 'happy clappers' are going to put a positive spin on this one?

GOOD LUCK STEVE, YOU'LL BE MISSED BY HUNDREDS.

Is it all over???  Reply with quote

My son joined the youth development at the beginning of the season - he has now moved up to play for the thirds. We were impressed with the set-up and regularly travel 140 miles round trip to come to training and games etc.

I am not a 'happy clappy', but I do not think that this is necessarily the end of the youth system. I have posted elsewhere that I have confidence in Mr Heaney and he has reconfirmed his goals for the club. I think there will be a youth system -you don't appoint a new head of youth for nothing. This new guy carries a lot of influence - I am not sure that Steve Matthews (good guy that he is) did so.

I think this, as Heaney has said is about facilities. It may also be political. Key to the new development is facilities for kids - no new development = no facilities for kids. To continue forking out the thousands it has cost on hiring facilities etc is in the short-term not now feasible. At times it did seem that the youth set-up was throwing money away (the Chelsea trip is a good example of at least 3-4K being wasted). Similarly if the club can run a youth set-up without the new facilities it does (am sad to say) weaken the argument for getting new facilities.

Again Heaney is no dunce - he knows he has to bring through players because (as PAFC will testify) no amount of money will attract players this far down.

I think we need to wait to see what comes from all of this. I think however there is more to this than meets the eye. I think there will be questions asked about the the use of the budget to date, and what we may see is a scaled back version of what is here already.
