St Agnes A 0, Truro City 1 (Sunday 11th May)  Reply with quote

City, even though with a much changed side from their previous fixture, came away from Enys Parc with three hard earnt points.

The penultimate game of the season was doubtful before the kick-off as a mist shrouded the ground making visibility of the whole pitch difficult, but once the game got under way, Truro never lost their way and thoroughly deserved to come away from this game with a victory.

Despite being slow to get going, goalkeeper Richard Walter only really had to make one telling save during the first 45 minutes, diving full-length to his left to touch away a St Agnes shot from the edge of the penalty area.

At the other end, City striker Paul Webber, on a couple of occasions, could have opened City's scoring, if only he had connected with the ball!

City brought on Lloyd Saunders for player/manager Howard Stokes late in the first-half, but with almost his first run on goal Saunders went down injured.

Saunders came out for the second-half, but was soon replaced by Stokes and it proved crucial because "the gaffer" scored the only goal of the game.

A break by City saw Cookie, with plenty of time out on the right, put in a teasing cross and as midfielder Dave Beaumont occupied the attention of the Aggies' keeper, Stokes was creeping in at the far post. In slow motion, he took one step backwards and used all his years experience to head downwards, ensuring the ball bounced over three or four defenders on the goal-line and into the roof of the net.

That goal proved enough for the three points, even though the home side turned on the pressure in the closing stages but never really put Walter under any real danger.

City's last game is on Tuesday evening, home against the league champions Hayle. It's being staged at St Agnes as City's pitch is being worked on for next season.
