On the radio an analogy was used where once a cricketer gets to 99 does the other team let him have an easy single just to make 100 and then start playing properly again.
It shows from Capello that each cap must be earnt and not just handed out to the favourites that past managers had. _________________ Sir Matt, Sir Alex yet 5 times and no knights.

International caps have been devalued compared with the days they had to be earned, mass substitutions in friendlies gave international status to many who find it difficult to get a regular place in Premiership or Championship sides.
Capello is RIGHT, the Beckham international era is OVER, a combination of McLarenitis and self imposed exile has seen to that, even if David Beckham got match fit, it will be at a standard far down the pecking order to justify his inclusion at International level.
David Beckham has been a good servant to England, unfortunately he will remain Mr 99. _________________ "CHAMPIONS AGAIN"

I think footballing history will look back on this and ask - how can a 'Legend' like Beckham be treated in this way..?? |

He hasn't been treated badly this time, he hasn't played a competetive game for about 3 months, before that it was a few games in the Yankee Doodle version of our Blue Star Conference North/south.
Let's face it playing in America is no training for representing England, even XEMBLA has to fly over to London to see a decent team. _________________ "CHAMPIONS AGAIN"

The squad and team that represents England should be based on the best in-form available players to Capello regardless of past history, what their name is or how many caps they have.
If Beckham is a "Legend" he will know what he has to do to get back into the international squad. No doubt he will carry on training hard like he has been with Arsenal, oh no, he's already gone back to the States _________________ We Stand Together |

His fitness level would have been far too low for this match. Training with the Gooners is no substitute for regular match practice. His time may now have gone. Shame, but that is pro sport for you. _________________ There is life out there... |

Ridiculous!
Surely ANY player who has turned out for Manchester United has a perfect right to play for his country, whenever he feels the need! Remember, there is the little matter of a 'God given right!'

looking at the Kops post,
yes i agree, Gary Sobers needed just a couple of runs to average 100 in his last innings but was out for 0. The other team didnt bowl him an easy shot for 4 just so he could average 100.
If Beckham should play to make 100caps then why not bring back Geoff Hurst, Bobby Charlton etc _________________ There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that dont.

At the risk of being hooked and reeled in myself, it was Don Bradman, not Gary Sobers. |

the name wasnt the important bit.
I'm not old enough to remember and its a rubbish sport anyway that people can play one game for 5 days and it still be a draw.
Or the result known after 2 days if 3 days of bad weather are predicted. _________________ There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that dont.

Well, no, I realise that. I just had to get in before Mountaineer. He would have pointed out that Sobers test career average with a bat was 57.78, whereas Bradman averaged 99.94. Still, Ivor couldn't resist adding his bit. Predictable as ever.

I'm not old enough either (well, for the Bradman bit anyway) but it's easy enough to Google, don't you think?
As for the rest of your comment, I'm inclined to agree with it all..............except the bit about cricket being a rubbish sport. That's golf.
PS What's the bit about the Wallsend White Tigers? |

That a foul on Mountaineer! Conference North/South indeed! National team and World Cup caliber players routinely feature in MLS. I would estimate that our league is Championship quality, probably. True, even at the end of the season Beckham was hardly fit, and he hasn't played since then, so the match fitness argument is still valid.
At the same time, if you're Capello, you pick Becks, get him the cap -- it's a friendly against the Swiss, you know -- and then he never has to worry about him again!
It is true that I came to see City play -- and I'd love to come again! _________________ UP to the South! |
