DUSTIN,

Will we be getting intelligent input so we may understand the Yankee set up?

I noticed on another thread you posted "I have said my PEACE" was this a clever slip to bring harmony to the terraces?

There "I have said my PIECE".

Had a look at the links - thank you, the striker Trujillo's name would go well on the Truro Team sheet.
There is not a lot of understanding here about the set-up over there - we probably know a lot more about the leagues/teams in Italy & Spain.
Is the MLS League your equivalent of our Premiership or are there any rival Leagues looking to be on the same footing.?
Will look forward to any updates from you - could be something of interest in the horrible, dark, gloomy months of June & July when we don't have any football here..!!

US soccer  Reply with quote

Here in the States, the sport is controlled by the USSF (United States Soccer Federation), our equivalent of the FA.

Major League Soccer is the highest level of the North American pyramid, the Canadian Soccer Association having joined forces (although they only have one representative at the MLS level, Toronto FC). MLS is the recognized platform and there are no serious alternate leagues.

Below the MLS on the "pyramid" is the USL (United Soccer Leagues). And it is rather like the "league" in England, that is, the Premier League is separate, as is the MLS, but from there down it's more unified. At any rate, the USL operates two leagues (Divisions 1 & 2) that serve as steps two and three, although there is no system of promotion or relegation, making the steps static. As far as I know, there are no plans to introduce promotion, although I personally think it's a great idea.

That's as far as the "professional" leagues go (at USL Div 2, the minimum salary is about $20,000/yr and the attendance averages about 1500).

The USL does operate a developmental league (step 4) as well as a youth league and a women's developmental league. The developmental leagues are part-time and designed as training/feeder squads, etc.

The CONCACAF will have a Champions League starting this year, and currently four MLS teams will qualify. There is a "Super League Cup" between four US and four Mexican teams. The US Open Cup is the closest thing in practice to the FA Cup, and USL operates the Dallas Cup, which featured the Liverpool Reserves this year!

There are fourteen teams in the MLS, divided into an Eastern league and a Western League. Kansas City is in the Eastern League. Everybody plays everybody else home and away, but then four more league matches with regional or "traditional" rivals; KCW will get Columbus, Chicago, New England, and Toronto as their "extra" matches.

There is a playoff system to determine the winner of the MLS Cup, the postseason trophy (the "Champions"). Kansas City won the Cup in 2000, and lost in 2004. The team with the best regular-season record wins the Supporters Shield.

If you want to watch some MLS matches, the league operates an on-line channel for about ten pounds: http://web.mlsnet.com/products/

Until this year, KCW played in the caverous Arrowhead Stadium, home of the NFL Chiefs, and it was a little depressing. Now they've moved to a smaller (max. 11,000) ground over on the Kansas side, while a purpose-built, state-of-the-art soccer ground is going up here in Missouri.

Of course, within four years, it's possible St. Louis will have a team, and then -- given my traditional geographic and cultural orientation -- I'll probably support them!

But until then, UP THE WIZ!

I was unclear  Reply with quote

No replay, this was just a regular league match. I'd just meant that those same two teams played each other in last year's semi-final.

The attendance is pretty good; the baseball stadium they're playing in only holds about 11,000. In Chicago, DC, etc. the crowds average almost 20K.

So, with items on the Website and the main forum about City travelling 4,711 miles next season - it made me wonder - what sort of mileages do 'The Wizards' have to travel in a season.
Although I bet most of the travelling is done by Plane I expect the total miles travelled would make our figure for next season look like we were just 'popping' next door...?

mileage  Reply with quote

As you say, BigG, the trips are done by plane, but here are the numbers for the cartographically curious:

New England Revolution (Boston) 1247 miles (one way) (twice)
New York Red Bulls 1092
DC United 941
Toronto FC 847 (twice)
Columbus Crew 619
Chicago Fire 412

Dallas FC 453
Colorado Rapids (Denver) 549
Houston Dynamo 659
Real Salt Lake 921
Chivas USA (LA) 1354
Los Angeles Galaxy 1356
San Jose Earthquakes 1475

for a grand total of approx 14,020 miles. Whew!
