TORONTO — A 34-year-old man from Mississauga, Ont., has been charged for allegedly making fake terrorist threats against a mall in New Jersey.
The RCMP alleges the man phoned in the threats to Toronto Crime Stoppers, Toronto police and the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office in New Jersey. Investigators say a male caller reported that a right-wing Muslim group was planning to make a name for itself by blowing up a mall in New Jersey.
The calls, made on Nov. 24, 2006, resulted in a significant police response being dispatched to the area.
Officers stopped incoming and outgoing traffic and prevented vehicles from stopping in loading zones around the mall.
Justain Dillon was arrested Wednesday and charged with terrorist hoax and public mischief.
"The RCMP takes these sorts of matters very seriously," said Supt. Jamie Jagoe.
"Far from harmless pranks, terrorist hoaxes cause very real apprehension and result in unnecessary and costly police responses." |
