Author to give annual lecture

SAN BERNARDINO - "Islam in North America: Separating Fact from Fiction" - an important topic in today's world and the subject of the annual Morrow-McCombs Memorial Lecture on Tuesday evening.

The 21st annual lecture, set for 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1900 N. D St., will be presented by Amir Hussain, associate professor in the department of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University.

Hussain is the author of two books on contemporary Islam.

Albert Karnig, president of Cal State San Bernardino, will chair the evening program and introduce Hussain.

The Morrow-McCombs Memorial Lecture, established in 1987 at Cal State San Bernardino to promote Jewish-Christian relations, more recently has been expanded to promote Jewish-Christian-Islamic relations.

"Over the years, we've had some preeminant religious scholars come to the Inland Empire," said Rabbi Hillel Cohn, a member of the founding committee.

"This year, our focus has been on Islam in North America," Cohn said "Amir Hussain is a very knowledgeable and dynamic speaker - a Muslim raised in Canada who teaches at a Catholic University."

Ward McAfee, chairman of the lectureship advisory committee and professor emeritus of history at Cal State, said, "There are too many misconceptions about Islam, one of the world's great religions. In our rapidly shrinking world it is imperative that we know just what Islam is and what it isn't."

McAfee said Hussain is "eminently qualified to help us `separate fact from fiction."'

The lecture is open to the public. Admission is free. A reception will follow the lecture.
