Israelis open fire on Palestinian boats suspected of smuggling arms

GAZA CITY — The Israel Navy is cracking down on Palestinian ships that appear to be smuggling to the Gaza Strip.

"The Israeli warships are not asking questions or even conducting searches," a Palestinian source said. "They are simply firing on the Palestinian boats."

Palestinian sources said Israel Navy fast patrol craft have attacked Palestinian vessels suspected of smuggling weapons and insurgents from Egypt to the Gaza Strip. The sources said the naval craft have sought to block the passage of suspicious vessels moving east from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

On Saturday, the Israel Navy fired on Palestinian fishing boats in the northern Gaza Strip. The Palestinian news agency, Maan, reported no casualties.

This marked the second Israeli operation against Palestinian vessels in as many days. On July 4, the sources said, Israel Navy attack craft fired shells at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast of the southern Gaza Strip near the Egyptian border. Several fishing boats were said to have been damaged.

The Hamas regime said the Israeli fire marked a violation of the ceasefire that began on June 9. Over the last two weeks, Palestinian militias have been firing missiles and mortars into Israel on a nearly daily basis.

Israel has complained to Egypt of a resurgence of weapons smuggling to the Gaza Strip via the Mediterranean. On Saturday, Egyptian police discovered three weapons tunnels that spanned the divided city of Rafah.

Egyptian police were also reported to have found a weapons and explosives cache near El Arish, the capital of the northern Sinai governorate. The cache was said to have included TNT as well as nine rifles.
