Friends mark two years since Goldwasser, Regev kidnapping

Tens of people marked two years since the kidnapping of IDF reservists Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev on Saturday, including many friends of the two captives.

The group, holding signs, flags, and photos of Goldwasser and Regev, made their way to the exact spot where the kidnapping took place on the Lebanon border, near Moshav Zar'it, on July 12, 2006.

The friends toured the area, and found remnants of melted metal on rocks, a testament to the events of the kidnapping, which sparked the Second Lebanon War. After the event, friends visited the Goldwasser family in Nahariya and the Regev family in Kiryat Motzkin.

The first stage of a prisoner swap agreement which Israel and Hizbullah signed last week is touted to begin in the coming week. As part of the deal, the two soldiers, presumed dead, will be returned to Israel in exchange for Lebanese terrorist Samir Kuntar, four Hizbullah fighters caught during the war and several bodies.

Israeli negotiator Ofer Dekel was in Germany on Thursday to finalize the German-mediated deal with Hizbullah.

On Wednesday, Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said the exchange would take place in mid-July. Regev and Goldwasser are believed to have been killed in the kidnapping attack, although Nasrallah has never confirmed that. The Red Cross has not been allowed access to the abductees.
