Indonesian Cleric Ba'asyir Urges Muslims Not To Disturb Christmas

Radical Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, head of the Indonesian Mujaheddin Council (MMI), on Saturday urged Indonesian Muslims not to "disturb" Christians, and not to take part in any celebrations during the Christmas season, local media reported.

"Obviously, Indonesian Muslims are not allowed to disturb, or join in any Christmas celebration, such as congratulate Christians or help them during Christmas," Abu Bakar Ba'asyir was quoted as saying by Detik.Com, a Jakarta-based online news provider.

The MMI is a fringe Islamic group chaired by Ba'asyir, who was jailed for 30 months for his role in the 2002 Bali terrorist bombings that left 202 people dead, including 88 Australians.

He is alleged to be the leader of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), the South-East Asia offshoot of al-Qaeda.

JI has been accused of being behind a string of terrorist attacks in Indonesia in recent years. These include the 2002 Bali blasts, the August 2003 J.W. Marriott Hotel bombing in Jakarta, which killed 12, and the September 2004 blast outside the Australian embassy, which killed 11 and wounded some 180.

Terror experts have also blamed the group for the October 1 triple suicide bombings on Bali last year, that killed at least 23 people at three restaurants in Kuta and Jimbaran.

Indonesian police have reportedly prepared to deploy at least 15,000 police to safeguard this year's Christmas celebrations in case of any trouble, such as bomb threats.

Ba'asyir has also urged Indonesian Muslims not to celebrate the New Year.
