More have negative feelings about Islam

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- A new Washington Post-ABC News poll says American`s negative feelings about Islam have risen since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
With the war in Iraq entering its fourth year, the poll says 46 percent of Americans have a negative view of the religion, up seven points since the Sept. 11 attacks.
The poll results reflect the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the violent Muslim protests over the Prophet Mohammed cartoons and the controversy over the administration`s plan to hand over the operations of six U.S. ports to a company owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates.
The poll said 33 percent of the respondents now believe Islam helps stoke violence against non-Muslims, up from 14 percent in January 2002.
James Zogby with the Arab American Institute blamed the results on politicians, authors and media commentators who, he said, have been demonizing the Arab world since 2001.
The poll was based on interviews of 1,000 randomly selected Americans between March 2 and 5. The margin of error for the overall results is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
