Police round up Karadzic's relatives
Police rounded up and interrogated several relatives of Radovan Karadzic in the latest attempt to locate the top war crimes fugitive, his brother said Sunday.
Luka Karadzic told The Associated Press that his sister, wife, daughter, son-in-law and two distant relatives were taken from their homes in Niksic on Saturday to a police station in Podgorica, the Montenegrin capital 24 miles away.
Radovan Karadzic, the Bosnian Serb wartime leader, was indicted more than a decade ago by the Netherlands-based U.N. tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for his role in Bosnia's 1992-95 war. He is believed to hiding in the Serb-run part of Bosnia or in adjacent Montenegro or Serbia. Efforts by NATO-led troops in Bosnia to capture him have failed.
Luka Karadzic — who was away in Serbia at the time and was not detained — said his relatives were later released but could not provide any information about the suspect's whereabouts. He accused the police of submitting them to "insane, unnecessary harassment."
There was no immediate comment from Montenegrin police.
The latest attempt to locate Radovan Karadzic in Bosnia was last month, when NATO soldiers raided the homes of his daughter and son.
Montenegro's government has sought to prove its democratic credentials as it strives to join the European Union and NATO.
Earlier this year, the tiny Adriatic republic declared independence after splitting from erstwhile partner Serbia, whose path to desired EU membership remains blocked until it hands over Bosnian Serb wartime military leader, Gen. Ratko Mladic, the other top fugitive.
U.N. war crimes prosecutors believe Mladic is being harbored by hard-liners in Serbia, although the government in Belgrade denies that.
The U.S. government has offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the capture of Karadzic, Mladic or four other suspects still sought by the tribunal.
